Pros

- Free drinks in the office on a Friday - Occasional free food - Liked the people I worked with - Opportunity to progress

Cons

My experience working at Octopus was horrible and completely shattered my confidence and mental health. They lied to us in training essentially selling the job as something completely different, and when I started working I realised it was basically like working in a call centre. There were no departments so we had to know how to deal with every type of query which meant our workload was too much to manage. Every aspect of our day was scheduled and controlled, there was constant negativity being pushed on us about stats being met. Was rarely allowed to take sick days as they would always just tell me to work from home instead. When I spoke up about my anxiety getting bad I got next to no support, was recommended to just ‘take baths’ and ‘meditate’ and was consistently gaslighted and told that’s it was ‘just the job’ and was my fault for not telling them how to support me (?). Bizarrely no HR department either so the only option I had was to talk to senior management about my issues who were part of the problem and definitely not trained to deal with MH. I would not recommend anyone to work here.

Octopus Energy Response

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We really appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear you didn’t feel you had the appropriate support during your time at Octopus. Our operating model is centred on teams supporting a customer base end-to-end. We do this through empowering teams with knowledge and tools, and believe this creates the best experience for team members and customers. We appreciate that this is different to how lots of other service teams run and can be demanding for the team. In the next 1-2 months, we’re looking at how we can rebalance workloads. It’s important for the team to recharge before returning to work after illness, and we encourage team members who are unwell to take time off. We’re sorry if that was not your experience. Whilst managers are trained and well-equipped to support teams with wellbeing and performance, team members are encouraged to speak to any leader in the business if they have concerns. We’ve started running drop-ins and Q&A to provide space for this. Thanks again for your feedback. Erin Bullions Head of Operations Octopus Energy

Pros

The only good thing about this job was the people I got to work with - I’ve made friends for life, but unfortunately we only bonded through shared trauma thanks to this job.

Cons

Where do I begin? The unpaid overtime, the hours spent working, sometimes without breaks, the customers, the unrealistic expectations, the toxic and downright rude management - I could go on. If you choose to apply for a job here (which I wouldn’t even recommend to my own worst enemy), don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll just be answering calls and emails. You’ll be expected to be a metering engineer, a billing expert, complaints handler and a vulnerability specialist, and by the way, you won’t be trained in any of the above. You get treated like a piece of dirt, not just by customers, but by the senior management team. You’ll think they’re lovely at first, but I doubt they’d even spit on you if you were on fire after about a week, once they realise they have a naïve, typically young, fresh of uni, unsuspecting and inexperienced person that they can easily take advantage of. The pay is not worth it AT ALL. I’ve worked it out, and it’s only about £2 or so above minimum wage, and for the 2 years of sleepless nights, panic attacks and crying after phone calls, I can guarantee you anything would be better than working at Octopus Energy for that amount. By the way, other companies will pay you much better for the same job, in fact, doing even less than expected. You’ll be told that you can work flexibly, but what that really means is that you’ll work unpaid overtime, but that’s ok, because you get an AMAZON VOUCHER! Wow! I can really save up for a car or deposit with that! Such a generous thought from billionaire Greg Jackson! Oh wait, it’s because they don’t get taxed on it. Don’t expect any help from an HR department or union, because guess what! They don’t have one. If that’s not a red flag then I don’t know what is. Please - have some respect for yourself and do not even think about applying.

Pros

- Nice people - Free lunch + Breakfast - Inclusive and diverse

Cons

- Atrocious pay - Atrocious workload - No HR department - Inadequate training - Terrible customer base (people will call and threaten to kill themselves, threaten to hurt you, insult you, scream at you) - 'Family dinner' on a friday is an exercise in self pleasure for the CEO - prepare to pop champagne as half the country goes bankrupt from energy profiteering - Atrocious structure - there are no departments meaning the role is far too broad, you will be expected to solve a preposterous variety of issues and you will have incredibly inadequate time in which to solve it - there is no forwarding infrastructure for calls so prepare to be talking to an incredibly vulnerable customer and be unable to forward them to your team's vulnerability specialist - difficult issues can take months to solve as you will never be given the 4-5 hours you may need to actually fix a problem and thus they get kicked around for months as no-one wants to take responsibility and the customer grows more and more frustrated - Poor opportunities to progress - specialisms and probation take months to complete and come with pitiful pay rises - Cliquey - Inordinately stressful
