Sold a dream but all is not as it seems

Pros

I couldn't fault the interview process and the time and effort that went into this process - although when I was interviewing they weren't sure which position I was best suited to, they sold me a dream so I was excited regardless.

Cons

You are sold the dream of TOG but when you read and understand the small print it's not the case. There is too much of a noticeable hierarchy and those at the bottom of the food chain never get noticed for their hard work, when after all they seem to be doing all the work for those above them. Senior members of staff are very clicky and stick with their own and are often very belittling towards junior staff. I personally was bullied by my manager and although the HR team dealt with it very well, it wasn't enough to convince me to stay at a company that wishes they were all singing and dancing but underneath the surface fail to keep the good staff as they realise their worth. Pay is very poor and they are completely unsympathetic to illness (had 0 days off sick in 11 months) and grievance. I understand the larger the company that HR grows with that, but have some empathy towards others.

Thank you for such a detailed review. It is never easy doing this and we are incredibly grateful. You raise some very concerning things, many of which are difficult to comment on as some time has now passed. However, it was encouraging to read that HR dealt well with your complaint. We expect a lot from our incredible people managers and to hear one of them behaved badly is disappointing and frustrating. Your comment about us not being sure which role would suit you is seen by many candidates as a positive thing. We recruit for potential and don't approach recruitment with a one size fits all approach. If we like you-and clearly we did-then we will find or even create a role that's just right for you. We also go to great lengths to recognise great effort including spot awards, monthly stars awards, quarterly team awards and our much anticipated annual TOG awards. On pay we believe we are competitive but we are not complacent and we appreciate we need to keep this under regular review. All the best in the future.

Pros

Meeting new clients, interacting with different people, organising events (with low budget not fun), working alongside another front of house, making friends.

Cons

Micro managed by managers, managers too young, former Abercrombie managers (narrow minded and hard to work with), Front of house are not listened to. Higher management have too close of a relationship to line managers there for when you have a issue with your manager you have no one to go to.. Bad atmosphere, fake people, not a nice place to work. 60 percent of Front of House agree. CEO's have not idea what goes on behind the scenes in the buildings...

We enjoy high levels of employee engagement and last year 86% of TOGGERS said they were proud to work for us. But these numbers mean little if we don't fulfil the promise we make to new starters that they've joined a like no other place to work. We know we need to attract and retain the very best managers because without them we lose great people like you. We are focused on getting this right in every corner of TOG. Good luck in the future.

Pros

- If you are lucky, you get to meet a couple of really great people - Work hours

Cons

- The pay is terrible, for what you do you’re severely underpaid and there is a lot of pay inequality across the same role. You are also “not permitted” to discuss pay with coworkers, so you see how that can happen - Groups of management from different buildings discuss employees’ personal information with no regards to privacy - I have seen multiple managers being horrible to other employees and clients, HR was always aware and “taking feedback on board”. That is of course not true, don’t bother with HR just leave - Workload is three times more than what initially advertised in the job listed - New employees do not get trained properly (or at all) by management, you’ll be expected to do a lot of it even if you’re still new yourself as everyone with 2+ experience left - Really bad communication within the teams, and between the buildings and head office - Clear favouritism across the whole company, everyone has noticed and nothing happens to prevent it - No promotion or discussion about career path unless you have been there for more than two years
