For Joe, an Engineering Transformation Lead, taking shared parental leave wasn’t just about time away from work - it was about building confidence, connection and a deeper bond with his son. “Parenting did not come naturally to me. I’m far more at home with tools and wires and engines than a baby. Looking back now, I’m convinced this time together helped shape me as a father and strengthened my bond with Benedict far more than if I’d returned to work full time after paternity leave.” The support of enhanced shared parental leave, flexible SPLIT days, and an encouraging team made it possible for Joe and his wife to share care in a way that worked for their family. This Equal Parenting Week, we’re sharing John’s story - a senior engineer who took advantage of our four weeks’ paid paternity leave, double the statutory entitlement. When John’s daughter was born, unexpected complications meant his family needed extra support. Living far from relatives, that additional paid leave made a real difference at a critical moment. “Having more paid paternity leave than the statutory requirement greatly benefited our family. I was able to care for my wife on her recovery journey, and spend more time bonding with my new daughter before I went back to work.” That time meant John could return to work feeling reassured and supported,.
