Our first-year ASPIRE graduates team have signed up for the Million Makers challenge and are ready to lay the foundations to secure their funding from the Prince’s Trust to start their project. Million Makers is a fundraising initiative with teams from companies across the UK competing to raise the most money for their projects, which is then donated to the Prince’s Trust supporting the great work they do. Despite last year’s restrictions, our 2019 Graduates knocked the ball out of the park, raising over £200,000 for the Prince's Trust. Our 2020 graduates have our full support – we can’t wait to see what they come up with!
This Mental Health Awareness Week, we've put on a variety of workshops and webinars for our people to better understand the role of mindfulness in combatting stress. The week provides an opportunity for our people to openly discuss all aspects of mental health and be comforted in knowing that one of our 22 trained Mental Health First Aiders will always be there to provide support.
The housebuilding industry is facing a skills gap, which means that there aren't enough people with the right knowledge and skills to meet demand as we help the country to grow back stronger. This is one of the reasons why we've taken the Social Mobility Pledge to strengthen our commitment to ensuring that anyone with the right mindset and determination can succeed at Barratt, whatever their walk of life. A year ago today, the UK came together for #ClapForOurCareers in partnership with NHS Charities Together. Over the past year, we've had the incredible frontline NHS workers on our minds and have introduced various initiatives to show our appreciation. In the early months of the pandemic, we donated PPE masks to the NHS and all of our site defibrillators to St John Ambulance and St Andrew’s First Aid, alongside £100,000 for frontline NHS staff and volunteers. We also launched our NHS Deposit Contribution Scheme, giving all NHS workers a 5% deposit contribution to help them buy a new home. The scheme has already helped to save NHS workers £20 million.
Our Degree Apprenticeships are open to both future and existing employees. Dennis joined us after serving in the Armed Forces and the opportunity arose after he'd completed his level NVQ Level 4 as part of ongoing training at Barratt. His advice? Make sure you're ready to commit and be proactive in your role to allow for enough time to study.
Whether you're in a lecture, onsite or in the office, there's always something to learn as you work towards earning your degree to become either a Site Manager, Quantity Surveyor or Technical Coordinator / Project Manager / Designer, depending on your chosen programme. We are proud to announce that our Barratt Foundation will sponsor a Macmillan Cancer Support nurse for the next three years, helping to ensure that more people have access to support during cancer diagnosis and treatment. Macmillan nurses are experienced nurses who provide individually tailored support to people living with cancer, with one nurse typically helping around 185 people every year. As well as financial support, we will be working with Macmillan to provide training, guidance and support for our employees, helping our colleagues affected by cancer.
