Today Glassdoor turns seven years old! When we began, Glassdoor was a controversial website that made CEOs, HR professionals, marketers and communications people feel uncomfortable. This level of workplace transparency was new and with the site's debut it brought to light what was working well at companies and what needed to be improved. Fast forward to today, employers are regularly turning to Glassdoor to get a real-time pulse on their organizations; and they are harnessing the wealth of information by using the platform to recruit and build their employer brands. If you're new to Glassdoor, want to discover more, or just want to help celebrate some company highlights-- here are seven things that we're proud of as we reflect on our impact on the recruiting and employment industry. 1. Glassdoor is one of the largest jobs & recruiting sites in the U.S. Glassdoor's recruiting offerings are now a full machine of job advertising services. On Glassdoor, you can recruit and hire from our 30 million member candidate pool, target job seekers based on behaviors and interests, get even smarter about your practice with deep analytics and run display campaigns for your hiring initiatives. Plus, while Glassdoor started as a platform to give an inside look at jobs and companies, it is now one of the largest jobs and recruiting sites in the U.S., outpacing CareerBuilder.com. As Glassdoor has continued to attract a growing and engaged audience of job seekers, companies are signing up to attract and find great candidates. Some recent client successes include:
  • App Dynamics hired 22 engineers at an 82% lower cost-per-hire when compared to LinkedIn's recruiting solutions.
  • Enterprise Rent-a-Car hired 1,137 people in just two years with Glassdoor.
  • loanDepot saved $250,000 by eliminating two traditional job boards from its recruiting strategy.
2. Glassdoor has become the go-to platform for employer branding With dynamic employer branding content like 'why work for us' messaging, videos and social media integration, you can truly tell your story on Glassdoor. Monitor your brand awareness with reputation management, analyze your employer branding impact vs. your competition and track your rankings in categories like Culture & Values, Work/Life Balance and Benefits. And, you can't ignore Glassdoor anymore - as Jennifer Newbill of Dell shared in this blog post, "Glassdoor will continue to evolve and grow - there is no question in my mind about that. My advice? If you are not paying attention to your presence on Glassdoor, you are missing a huge part of your employment brand story." Why are employers like Dell turning to Glassdoor to recruit and brand? Because on average employers see three to ten times more people visiting their Glassdoor profiles than their LinkedIn profiles - plus many are seeing many more job seekers visiting Glassdoor than their own company careers' sites. 3. Glassdoor is driving change across the world from Europe to North America to India Glassdoor's community is truly global as we welcome members from across 190 countries - interestingly, prior to October 2014 Glassdoor was purely in English, yet since that time we have now made the platform (desktop, iOS and Android apps) available in three additional languages: French, German and Dutch. As such, we've made sure to offer both free and paid recruiting tools available to all organizations.
  • Employers everywhere can sign up for a basic Free Employer Account (in fact there are more than 3,000 signing up for this account each month) - this account allows an official company representative to respond to reviews, flag reviews that may be inappropriate and see interesting analytics about their company's brand and reputation.
  • For companies that cross country borders, we introduced the ability to localize Enhanced Profiles so if you're trying to hire candidates in the U.S. and France, you can customize your message to the regions where you are trying to recruit.
  • In the UK, we've seen many employers have success recruiting using the Glassdoor Essentials package, which includes an Enhanced Profile and Job Ads. For example, Huddle increased its brand awareness by 300% by using Glassdoor Job Ads and an Enhanced Profile. They said, "When I compared numbers of views in early 2014, I found our Glassdoor page had far more views than our LinkedIn company page, and at that same time, we were just using the Free Employer Account. Once we partnered with Glassdoor and began managing our page's content, we saw a 300% increase in candidate awareness."
4. Glassdoor is helping highlight the growing role of the HR professional A recent article published in The Business Journals, "Are you suffering from 'Glassdoor angst'?" highlights just how much Glassdoor has changed in the minds of CEOs and HR leaders--according to the article, "more than half of the CEOs I speak with mention their Glassdoor reviews in their first meeting." The author, Bob Corlett, goes so far as to say companies must rethink HR at their organizations because of Glassdoor. "The need for public reputation management dramatically increases the demand for strategic HR professionals: people who can work within social media channels to mitigate bad reviews, as well as propose and execute solutions that address the issues underlying bad Glassdoor reviews." And, with the quality of candidates on Glassdoor two times higher than candidates from other job posting sites, it's a worthy investment. 5. Glassdoor continues to be a worthy investment with investors So, how have we managed to accomplish all of this? With the help of our investors who keep us going. In October 2008, we secured $6.5M in Series B funding - an amount which was doubled in February 2011 when we received $12M in Series C funding. Then, we raised $20M in October of 2012 among international growth and company-wide expansion. Most recently, we secured $50M in December 2013 to further expand our global reach and received the notorious $70M from Google Capital & Tiger Global Management in January of this year. This funding has allowed us to hire more than 450 employees across the San Francisco Bay Area, Scranton, OH and London, England. Plus investors are increasingly interested in the types of insights Glassdoor offers on more than 400,000 companies. For example, investors were extremely interested in a report from Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, who identified a connection between company culture and financial performance. 6. Glassdoor is just getting started! Seven years in and we're incredibly optimistic for what's to come. The impact of workplace transparency is just beginning. We'll continue our company promise to better connect job seekers and employers in everything we do. Looking back on our launch in 2008, our CEO Robert Hohman said it best: "We built Glassdoor for a very simple reason - because we believe work matters. At the core, everyone craves meaningful work. We want to know that all of our blood, sweat and tears matter. We want to know that all of those hours away from our family aren't for nothing. We want - we need - to believe that we are serving a higher purpose and that the world is better off because of our work." 7. Last but not least… Glassdoor really appreciates YOU! Thank you to all those in the employment industry that have shared thoughts, opinions and ideas on how to make Glassdoor better. At Glassdoor, we believe in community and the Glassdoor community thrives not only on job seekers and employees but the full employment landscape. Truly and sincerely we thank everyone - our clients, agency partners, advertising partners, OpenCompany employers and Free Employer Account holders, just to name a few. Please keep the feedback coming as it inspires us every day to work hard to help people find jobs and companies they love, and help companies better recruit.
