Healthcare workers have gone on strike or walked out of the job in recent weeks to voice dissatisfaction with pay and working conditions.
Glassdoor data shows that employee satisfaction with compensation and benefits declined sharply between 2019 and 2023 for several key frontline healthcare occupations – including for surgeons, pharmacists, physicians and physical therapists.
- The largest rating declines have been for surgeons (from 4.3 to 3.7 stars on average between 2019 and 2023) and physician advisors (from 4.0 to 3.7 stars).
- The average rating has improved for healthcare administration, pharmacy technician, and mental and cognitive therapy roles. It has been stable for medical technology, registered nursing, and C-suite roles.
- Similar to many industries, satisfaction with compensation and benefits is highest in C-suite roles.
The healthcare industry has been on the frontlines of public health crises in recent years, and has not benefited from remote work to the same extent as other skilled service industries. With long training pipelines, and risk-sensitive corporate cultures, the sector is likely to see continued workforce engagement and satisfaction headwinds.
