Since the early pandemic days of 2020, conversations about where people work and whether productivity is bolstered in an office or remote environment have been consistent on the Fishbowl by Glassdoor platform. As the prevalence of hybrid or remote policies continues to climb, so too are the number of employers implementing employee surveillance programs.

Professionals on Fishbowl by Glassdoor are weighing in on how they feel about their employer surveilling their activity and whether that’s impacting their productivity. More than 2,300 professionals in the US weighed in: 41% say their employer monitoring their work devices makes them feel less productive and 36% don't know if they’re being monitored in the first place.

How do certain industries feel about employer surveillance?

  • Finance professionals feel the strongest about how it impacts productivity, with 43% saying employer surveillance harms productivity, followed by 43% of tech professionals and 39% of consulting professionals.
  • Accounting professionals appear to be among the most comfortable with employer surveillance, with 25% saying employer surveillance does not harm their productivity. They are also the most unsure about whether they’re being monitored in the first place, with 41% saying they don’t know if their employer is monitoring them.

Methodology: This poll ran from June 21, 2023 through June 28, 2023 and was answered by 2,385 U.S. professionals on Fishbowl by Glassdoor. Respondents could answer with either “Yes” or “No”.
