      Graduate Management Scheme Interview

      Sep 20, 2016

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Clancy Group (Harefield, England) in Sep 2016

      Interview

Started with an online application; with a CV and short application form. Was then invited about 2 weeks after the deadline to a phone screen interview, where we were given a 3 day window when they would call. Followed by an assessment day at their HQ from 9am-4pm. Waiting to hear back. The phone interview was more fact finding than a formal interview; but prepare by researching the company thoroughly- there was 8 questions lasting about 20 minutes: 1. Run through your CV and work experience 2. Do you drive? Do you have your own transport? 3. You will have to live away for placements, are you comfortable with that? 4. What do you know about the company? 5. Why do you want to join this scheme? 6. What are your salary expectations? 7. Have you been a part of a team? 8. Have you got any holidays booked within the next year? Shortly after I was invited via email to the assessment day at their HQ in Harefield, its in a difficult location to get to so pre-plan the journey well in advance and get there early. The day consisted of a short presentation about the company and a series of 5 team exercises. The group was divided into smaller groups of 3/4 and put in different rooms for the whole day to do a series of group tasks. The groups didn't change throughout the day, the activities we had to do were- ACTIVITY 1 Tomato Launcher- Working as a team to build a catapult for a cherry tomato using sticks, rubber bands, string etc. to a budget in 40 mins. There was then a whole group competition to see who's went the furthest and the winner got chocolates. ACTIVITY 2 Review and Presentation- 10 mins alone and together to review the group task and suggest improvements for next time. -Make a list of what you believe the team did well -Make a list of what you believe could have been done better -How would you like things to be done differently next time? ACTIVITY 3 Feedback- 10 mins to prep constructive criticism for your team members on how they did in the group task and what they could improve on. Then 10 mins to feed back to each other. This was the most difficult to review someones performance within such a short task. ACTIVITY 4 Airport Challenge- Crisis Management task- to do with a potential tsunami situation, in groups had to make a 5 point action plan for how to evacuate the airport and minimise risks. Then presented to assessors the plan. Communication between the team and prioritisation are key here, make sure to consider everyones ideas and debate. ACTIVITY 5 10 most important discoveries of man- had 10 minutes to list our ideas and then 20 minutes to debate between the group and agree on the top 10. Then presented to assessors. Overall, they aren't technical or trick tasks, just mainly seeing how you work in a team and negotiate. Very important show you can collaborate and communicate clearly your ideas. In all honesty it really comes down to who you are in a team with, if its with a more difficult character, the groups don't change, so the whole day could be a struggle. But it is a very relaxed and positive environment and the management are very friendly and encouraging; so its really about if they like your personality and see your fit in the team rather than technical expertise.
