Mission We have over a century of qualifications expertise dating back to 1903 when our predecessor boards were founded by five leading universities. These public exam boards came into existence to provide an opportunity for young people from a range of backgrounds to access education and make the most of their potential.
This commitment to social mobility remains at the heart of AQA’s charitable purpose, which is to advance education by enabling teachers and students to realise their potential.
We demonstrate this by providing qualifications that enable students to progress, and reinvesting any surplus we make in:
- research – through the expertise of our Assessment Research and Innovation teams, we ensure that we are able to continuously improve the quality and reliability of our assessments and contribute to the development of assessment policy and practice, both in the UK and around the world
- offering a broad range of qualifications because we believe they have educational value – and not offering qualifications that could be profitable, but we don’t think would help students progress
- directly funding activities such as our AQA Unlocking Potential programme, which helps develop and inspire young people facing challenges in life.
- improving social mobility through education, by sponsoring groups of teachers from areas with low student attainment, to attend residential leadership courses with The PTI (Prince’s Teaching Institute).
Our purpose is to advance education by helping students and teachers to realise their potential. As part of AQA, you’ll very quickly appreciate the determination and unwavering passion to deliver this goal in everything we do. To help drive these ambitions, AQA invests in the development of its people by offering a range of professional development and learning opportunities leading to over 50% of our permanent roles being filled internally.
We spend a good portion of our life at work, so we’re dedicated to making sure you’re comfortable and healthy. At AQA, you’ll enjoy a 35 hour week with flexible working arrangements. Our Wellbeing team promote and run lots of initiatives to remind our people of how important their physical and mental health really is. On top of this, AQA provides Mental Health first aiders along with free access to the Headspace app.
One of the key elements to making AQA a great place to work is our commitment to flexible working. Here, we want to empower everyone to manage their personal commitments whilst delivering their professional accountabilities.
With our new strategic objectives in place, we are moving quickly to grow and become the UK’s pre-eminent educational assessment organisation. We also regularly ask our teams about their environment, development, management, peer relationships, reward and our strategy. Meaning that we’re always evolving and adapting to suit the needs of our people.
Description Helping students and teachers to realise their potential Everyone has the potential to achieve, so we make sure that our qualifications give all students the opportunity to show what they can do and progress to the next stage of their lives.
Our UK qualifications are highly valued by employers and universities around the world. They are taught mainly in schools and colleges and include GCSEs, AS and A-levels, the Extended Project Qualification and Technical Awards.
We set and mark over half of all GCSEs and A-levels taken in the UK every year. As an independent education charity, our income is reinvested back into AQA’s charitable activities. It also funds our cutting-edge research, which sits at the heart of our assessments and supports our initiatives to help young people facing challenges in life realise their potential.
We also provide support and services that enable learning. These include a comprehensive support and training package for teachers, opportunities for professional development (CPD) and online resources to help teachers in the classroom.
As Wales’ largest awarding body, at WJEC we provide trusted bilingual qualifications, straight-forward specialist support, and reliable assessment to schools and colleges across the country. With more than 70 years’ experience, we are also amongst the leading providers in both England and Northern Ireland.
Born out of a consortium of local education authorities in 1948, we are now a registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our strategic direction and key decision-making is led by our Executive Leadership Team who are supported by more than 350 dedicated employees, including subject specialists, and experienced teaching and learning professionals.
Following the introduction of reformed general qualifications in 2015, we have become the sole qualification provider for state-funded schools and colleges across most GCSE and AS/A level subjects. Therefore, it remains essential that we offer products and services of the highest quality, including Welsh-medium provision for all of our qualifications.
Through working in close partnership with key stakeholders in our education communities, including Schools, Colleges, Regional Consortia, and Qualifications Wales, we’re committed to playing our part in supporting the Welsh Government’s drive to ensure ‘Wales has an education system that is a source of national pride.’
