Pros

You get to work with genuinely nice and interesting people, though it depends on where you work, as different teams and divisions have different cultures. Benefits and workplace wellbeing support have got better over the years. Lots of brilliant staff networks which provide safe spaces and also push for positive change. Career opportunities to move around have improved a lot, such as 80/20 and Hot Shoes schemes, so you can try working in a different part of the business. There are many different roles, career pathways and departments. BBC is a global brand that is recognised and respected anywhere in the world. If you are a content producer, you can use your creativity and tells stories on a global platform that reaches millions of people.

Cons

- Manager lottery - if you have the misfortune of having a bad manager, they can cause career blight. Ethnic minorities tend to have poorer outcomes, get stuck in the same role for years without being promoted, even if their work is excellent, and get paid less than their white peers. Many cases of bullying and exclusion of minorities. - There are areas with toxic cultures like News, it is rare to have a senior leader and decision maker from ethnic minority background. There is a culture of fear, people unable to speak up if they see or experience behaviour or decisions that are against the BBC values of respect or impartiality. Things have improved somewhat over the years, with culture being taken more seriously, but the repeated editorial mistakes, and scandals take their toll on staff moral. - brutal cuts that lead to job losses, huge amounts of uncertainty. - favouratism continues in hiring decisions, and it is very hard to prove or challenge. Poor pay progression. - political appointments at Board level undermine trust in decisions and impartiality. - clear bias in reporting on conflict zones , important and relevant voices that go against the dominant narrative are systemically excluded so that the audience is not able to get a balanced picture of what is truly happening, this undermines trust in impartiliaty in News.

Pros

Great team, great manager, extensive range of support resources, fun opportunities to engage with BBC content, many options for lateral progression, flexible working in a hybrid model

Cons

C-level execs and board are very out of touch with most employees, BBC News' editorial stance on various topics is extremely right-wing and grim, diversity is improving but still very white/middle-class/affluent, money is always tight and potential job cuts are stressful for most staff, processes can be onerous, tech for most staff is middling, progression hits a ceiling at bands C/D for many teams

Pros

Flexible work patterns A small semblance of working for the public good (eroding fast)

Cons

Promotions - when they exist which is once in a blue moon - are based on favouritism not merit Horrific pay, made worse by terrible opportunities to increase within your band Changing product strategy every five minutes Poor leadership who kick the ladder down behind them
