Pros

There are no pros to this job.

Cons

During my time at Benefit, I had the worst 6 months of my life. I was employed on the Brow Bar and ended up with a months sick note off my doctor I was that poorly from stress and anxiety. The sales targets were ridiculously high resulting in me being back to back with appointments, being rushed and making customers late, not having any time for a break and the job becoming painfully repetitive. Although I like my makeup a little more natural, I was forced to wear heavy makeup and told I was not nice enough without it and the way I looked was downgrading the counter. My manager told me I didn't belong on a beauty counter as I didn't have the right look and was the laughing stock of the other counters. I don't have much confidence anyway and get insecure about my looks, so my confidence hit rock bottom. I told the Debenhams managers about this and they pretended nothing happened. Traffic stopping was a huge part of this job role which become very draining and pressured. The atmosphere was the worst I'd ever experienced and the other girls were constantly crying. We had constant meetings with our counter manager about what we needed to do to improve our sales and how to drive productivity. I understand this is the nature of retail, but everything was so negative. Nothing nice was ever said to us or what great things we had done, it was completely unnoticed when we had worked hard. We just got pushed and pushed to the point 8 girls left in the space of 5 months. I have never felt as bad about myself or as self conscious. The company is not for making women feel good about themselves, it's simply greedy and run by bullies. I would not recommend this brand to anyone and I have never felt as relieved to leave this company. It's painfully run by hard faced managers who do not support or look after their staff. Even when I come back after having 4 weeks off, no one asked if I was OK or if they could help with anything, I had a back to work meeting and was told my targets had gone up and was shown a new online booking system that enabled to fit more customers in. I was in absolute disbelief and instantly handed my notice in. Please reconsider if you are looking to apply with benefit, you are worked to the bone and very easily replaced.

Pros

The best part of the job was building relationships with my clients and helping them feel more confident through esthetic services. Those interactions made the work meaningful.

Cons

The work environment changed significantly under the current management. Communication became inconsistent, expectations frequently changed, and schedule changes were not always communicated directly. Employees often received conflicting information from different members of management, creating unnecessary confusion. There also appeared to be inconsistency in how opportunities, client assignments, and accountability were handled. Standards did not always seem to be applied equally, which contributed to a perception of favoritism and made it difficult to feel that employees were being treated fairly. The level of micromanagement made it difficult to build the genuine client relationships that had once made the job enjoyable. Instead of feeling trusted as experienced professionals, employees often felt closely monitored. Over time, the workplace became less collaborative, morale noticeably declined, and the boutique was simply no longer an enjoyable place to work. The company also seemed to be going through constant operational changes, making it difficult for employees to keep up with continuously shifting expectations. While Benefit is still a service-focused boutique, there appeared to be an increasing emphasis on retail sales. Employees were expected to balance providing excellent services with meeting growing sales expectations, and that balance became increasingly difficult. Compensation did not feel competitive considering the expectations placed on employees. More responsibilities continued to be added over time without meaningful increases in pay. Although there were bonus opportunities, I did not feel they adequately reflected the amount of effort required, especially since employees were expected to drive product sales without earning commission on the products they sold. Management also expected employees to maintain a high level of professionalism, yet I observed situations where those same standards did not always appear to be modeled consistently by leadership. That inconsistency made it difficult to feel supported and contributed to the decline in morale. I was fortunate to find another opportunity, but my decision to leave was driven by the decline in leadership, morale, and the overall work environment. The work itself and my relationships with clients were rewarding, but the management experience ultimately outweighed those positives. I no longer felt supported, valued, or confident that concerns would be addressed fairly or consistently.
