Smoke and mirrors

Pros

Some nice people in the business

Cons

Terrible overall experience. Explore is the kind of company which hires people with a great story about the positive social impact of its work but then internally is very cutthroat, sales driven and genuinely unpleasant. Many people in senior central office roles are doing two or three jobs because Explore won’t pay for the staff they need. Tutors are unqualified and very young which wouldn’t be an issue in itself if the service wasn’t expensive and sold as bespoke and special. Salaries are very low across the business. Cliquey teams made up of long term staff who believe they are somehow changing the world with their job and treat newcomers with contempt. Some long term staff are genuinely passionate and lovely but are taken advantage of by management with ridiculous responsibilities. People change roles constantly and internally this is sold as positive. The business focus and targets change literally once a month so you’ll never know what you are doing or how your job is being measured. Your job scope can change overnight with no discussion. Regular redundancies which are easily kept quiet because apart from tutors themselves everyone works from home/remotely.

Such poor management

Pros

The other tutors are lovely and try to keep each other motivated

Cons

Management is absolutely terrible. I worked in centre at first where the managers had clear favouritism, would act all sweet in front of us but never helped with any requests. Two of my colleagues even had a serious incidents where children were acting way out of our scope and when they asked for support or to not have that child in their zone anymore for their own safety, manager just shrugged and said they're customers. Then I moved to online which was a way bigger team so it does feel like you're on your own a little bit mostly other than teams, but one time I asked for a very urgent time off request which is usually fine and can just be added for cover, they absolutely refused to do that with no explanation - and everyone just kept passing the blame to me and sending me to other members of staff. Then, I got told 'fine we'll find a new tutor for that one session' but then they threatened me and said it's unauthorised, you're ruining our service just told us yesterday ?? I literally started crying and when I asked my manager LITERALLY to have a chat for my own mental health she completely ignored me, read my message like 5 days later and still never replied to date.
