Pros

Remote work is great - working with some latest .NET tech, generally good rapport amongst engineers - decent remuneration - not a lot of "on call" work etc.

Cons

Toxic leadership; make one mistake and you'll be crucified, often in front of many other team members. Claims to be a no-blame culture and often people are 'called' to explain errors in front of many other folk; Various leaders within software development and I have no idea what they actually do, projects with no ownership, shockingly bad developer experience, hugely understaffed supporting roles (DevOps), if you don't meet unrealistic standards of EVP of Engineering, you may as well be dirt. Engineering leadership needs to take more responsbility instead of blaming everyone beneath them. EVP is aggressive - whilst this can be effective there is a mental health toll. Shockingly bad for your mental health here. There's a 'chosen few' from a similar prior company who can do no wrong. Misogynistic comments from senior leaders are fine (from nearly all leaders). We can do better.

Pros

- Decent salary - Good health benefits - Mostly a great team of engineers - Interesting projects

Cons

It doesnt matter how much effort you put in as you aren't rewarded for it. The only people I've seen promoted meet any of the following criteria: - They are the loudest in calls - They are the loudest in chats - They are friends with, or were hired by one of the Engineering Directors (shh dont tell anyone!) It doesnt matter if they are right or wrong, just as long as you hear their voice its ok. In competency reviews I've hit promotion markers, yet still haven't been promoted even though others are promoted in half the time. Bonus structure is bad. I got a larger bonus at a previous company where I earned half as much as I do here. I've tried going above and beyond, doing anything I can to impress and stand out, but for doing so I got reprimanded and told that we cannot go beyond our current velocity as then product and the board will expect more and quicker. Great message to send. I guess I'll just stay in my hole and collect my paycheck.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We appreciate your contributions over the past several years and value feedback as an opportunity to grow and improve. We’re glad to hear you find our salary, benefits, team culture, and projects positive aspects of your role. That said, we take your concerns regarding career progression and recognition seriously. At Payroc, we strive to ensure promotions are based on merit, performance, and demonstrated skill, not visibility or relationships. However, we understand that perception is important. If you feel there have been inconsistencies, we encourage you to connect directly with your manager or HR partner to discuss your individual situation further. Regarding your feedback on velocity and going above and beyond, it’s important for us to balance sustainable workloads with team success. We want to empower our engineers to innovate and excel without creating unrealistic expectations. If you feel limited in your ability to contribute, we’d welcome a conversation to explore solutions together. We’re also continuously reviewing our bonus structures to ensure they are competitive and reflective of performance and company success. We acknowledge this as an area for improvement and are committed to finding ways to enhance recognition and reward for our employees. Your experience matters to us, and we want to support your growth and satisfaction here at Payroc. We encourage you to reach out to leadership or HR so we can have a more meaningful dialogue and work on a path forward together. Thank you again for your feedback and for being a valued part of our team.
