Pros

Diverse technically, some work is world-leading

Cons

Communication from the senior leadership team (SLT) is nonexistent. Line managers are often the last people to hear about things, and policies either change on a whim, aren't followed, or are never published in the first place. Graduates and apprentices are treated as if they are cheaper regular engineers and, beyond an initial bootcamp, the graduate scheme may as well not exist. Particularly poor around compensation. Salary is below market rates. Graduate pay is reviewed at the 6, 12, and 18-month points. Company announced an additional pay review between 12 and 18 months due to particularly good income projections, but then subtracted the amount added in this review from planned increases at the 18-month point. Promotion from the graduate scheme is at 24 months. In 2022, the pay increase offer for promoted graduates was both well below inflation and lower year-on-year than the offer given in 2021. Graduates were given 4 days to decide whether to accept the offer. This deadline was not communicated until day 3, and then only to certain line management groups. Despite pushing diversity, inclusion, and equality, fall seriously short in effectively drafting policies to actually accomplish this.

Pros

The customers are interesting to work with, providing a good variety of interesting technical challenges. The standard of the engineering staff is very good.

Cons

The level of morale is appallingly low, with senior leadership often attempting to bully staff rather than provide incentives for them. The pension is very poor with pay below industry standards, particularly in comparison to direct competitors. The company largely fails to pay bonuses due to unrealistic targets. There is no clear career development and it isn’t currently clear who you would discuss such opportunities with as a restructure has effectively removed the line management function. Senior management, having moved to a separate office away from staff are aloof and invisible. Needless to say they are not in touch with what is going on in the engineering departments at Roke.

Pros

Some great people, great talent and interesting work

Cons

Progression after grad scheme is restricted heavily. Notice period extended to 3 months, no ability to negotiate for a higher salary, lower year-by-year. Company has a serious problem with losing young engineers, bandaid solution seems to be hire more graduates instead.
