Dying a slow death

Pros

Good place to gain experience, good opportunities to travel, free medical and dental.

Cons

The cons are slowly out weighing the positives in this job, and it is now becoming just a job and no longer a career or vocation. The general attitude of the higher ranking officers is that all is well, that is not the case, every good young airman that comes along and begins to prove himself will often leave and go on to bigger and better things. usually paid more money for less hours work and a stable family life. They have even rather insultingly offered retention bonuses that are completely out of line with an expected figure and only benefited the guys who had already made a decision to stay in. I could go on but no one will actually listen and it will continue to get worse

Pros

Small possibility of going away somewhere nice with a flying squadron. Free Medical Care. Free Dental Care. Cheap Accommodation. Time out of work to play sport and train in the gym. Good selection of clubs to join. Good opportunities to get qualifications. Degree schemes available. Respectful, tolerant, fair and usually a friendly place to work.

Cons

No job satisfaction. So much bull. before you can actually just do your job. Not appreciated. Not technically challenging anymore. As a mechanic, the new ground equipment systems and generators, Fire Fighting Vehicles etc. are being contracted out to 3rd parties. This leaves us with nothing to sink our teeth into. Yet when these bits of kit go overseas, the civilians who normally work on them, don't deploy aswell. So that leaves us trying to work on a system we have no idea about because we've never worked on them before. Unless you are in "SLAM". Accommodation is so run down and building repairs take YEARS. Years is no exaggeration. So much money is wasted and can be better spent. For example a gym was recently built that was no bigger than a double garage. This cost £3.5 million. Anyone with a braincell wouldve asked around for quotes and realised that anything more than 60'000 is a joke. Doesn't set you up for later on in life unless you do private work outside of normal working hours to gain knowledge and experience. Doing a 6 month tour of the Falklands, coming back to the UK and waiting for the next one is no career. Pay is much better in civie street. The RAF would've gone bust years ago if it was a civilian company actually making money. RAF Brize Norton doesn't even have a working gym! Work/Life balance is crap, spend all week on camp if you live away, travel back home on the weekend if you're allowed. Doesn't feel like you're in the military. Blues uniform is awful. Not even given the chance to wear a PCS camouflaged fatigues, which is practical and comfier.

Pros

Opportunity for sports and fitness

Cons

Senior Leadership more concerned with pandering to the public over social media and playing politics. Rather than having an effective Air force. Deteriating support and management of contracts for infestructre ground equipment and services. They Prioritize new contracts for new Aircraft,Weapons, Tech . Liking the boots of defense contractor lobbyists. Poor medical care, they are more concerned with returning you to work than your physical and mental well being. They would rather pump you full of drugs and send you on your way than refer you. They only step up when a third party becomes involved and they exposed themself in a negative light. No Admin support, there are no admin workers on camp with exception of 2days a month, otherwise they're remote and won't respond to emails until after 9 days that was sent to a multi user account. Pay becoming non competitive with civilian jobs. Bullying and sexual harassment is a hot topic and for good reason. However it's difficult to stand there and be chest poked about the important topic by some of the worst enablers and perpetrators there are.
