Pros

The CEO The building in Coventry The Costa coffee The holidays

Cons

No senior mgt accountability No delivery We were promised 15 months ago that agile was the way forward and we were going to accelerate outcomes and deliver £120m worth of projects - only 15 months to go and still have over £100m to go with no substance behind agile - it is the emperors new clothes Constantly feel bullied to get on board with something that doesn’t work or exist - agile Truly abysmal / non-existent strategic leadership

Pros

- Decent rewards package - CEO has great ambitions but her vision isn't translated throughout the business - Annual pay review/ bonus (dependent on company performance) - Costa on site (Coventry)

Cons

- Awful culture, especially within the HR New talent and Resourcing team, managers gossip about employees and there's a massive issue with a bullying culture. I've experienced multiple employees leaving or been forced out due to the clique-like behavior of managers. - Nepotism is rife - Corporate virtue signaling- they preach about diversity and inclusion but they're very discriminative in practice. Make those who aren't able bodied/ POC/ religious feel excluded and isolated at work. - Unfair recruitment process (hiring managers will already know who they're hiring for the role but will interview anyway to give the impression of a 'fair and inclusive process') - No WFH flexibility- archaic mentality that full time office work is essential - No flexibility for people with children - No parking at the head office - Chief Engineer HRBP and wider HR teams have no regard for employee satisfaction, they work to protect the business rather than the needs of the employee. - Poorly run new talent programmes: no mentor, no support finding off-scheme roles, inefficient line manager training - insufferable office culture - Can't be yourself at work - I've personally experienced sexist remarks from operational staff and microaggressions and covert discrimination from Office managers.

Pros

My place within Severn Trent feels secure. They operate an excellent pension scheme as the company doubles your contributions up to a maximum of 15%. We receive a yearly bonus linked to company performance. There are a range of benefits which you can purchase such as dental care, up to 5 days annual leave & a gym membership (among many others). Severn Trent's CEO has committed to not making anyone redundant as a result of the pandemic.

Cons

I believe there are too many office based employees and therefore, there are loads of people walking around with very little to do. Managers keep hiring even though they know they don't need the additional resource just to protect their budgets. If you're someone who needs to be kept busy then I wouldn't recommend this as over time, it does affect your mental health. The training for new starters is very very poor. Career progression feels limited and vague. There's lots of sideways movement, not many people move up in seniority. The phrase 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' is very apt as people are often mapped to roles before jobs are even live on the job board. If you work at head office in Coventry City Centre and drive to work; you are required to pay for parking which I believe is in excess of £800 per year. To add, there are not enough spaces for the numbers that work in this building. There are other car parks located across the City Centre however, you obviously still have to pay and also walk across to get to work. Coventry City Centre can be a very daunting place so this isn't a very nice task and could be quite scary for some. Particularly in the winter months when it's dark. Sadly, while the company has always allowed flexible working on a limited basis (i.e you're allowed to work from home only when absolutely required) they haven't adopted a 'hybrid model' like many other employers off the back of the pandemic. Therefore, we all got summoned back in the office on a full time basis from mid July. This is really quite frustrating after having proven many of us are able to fulfill our roles remotely over the past 16+ months. Our CEO drives a 'social responsibility' message which of course is fabulous however, I would personally like to see a little more thought put into how colleagues feel about this sharp return to 'normal' to strike a better balance.

Thanks for your review – it’s great to hear that you are an advocate of lots of things at Severn Trent. As an operational business, we believe we work best for our customers when we're together and so we’re fundamentally still going to be an office or site-based business. We believe it's one of the many reasons we have such a supportive culture, and why we get some of the best colleague engagement scores in the world. We’re therefore sad to read your comments about you not wanting to come back into the office. Perhaps have a chat with your manager in the first instance to address any individual concerns that you may have or you can also call the HR Hub.
