Keeping Safe In Uncertain Times - A poem by Paula Miller (Care Support Worker - Redcar & Cleveland) We wear our PPE to go to work, to keep all around us safe We scrub and clean and wash our hands until they bleed and chafe. Its safety first for all of us, our rules are set in place We do weekly Covid tests and then there’s track and trace. The infection control is second to none and the same as Doctors and Nurses We wouldn’t put our customers at risk, no way not ever, it’s said with hidden curses. To break the rules of which are governed it is not big or clever We would not risk this deadly virus, not now and not ever. We work hard as hell with all this going on, but yet our wages are light as a feather We work in rain and hail and snowing a gale and sometimes sunny weather. We risk ourselves and our families too so that people have their care So be nice to us like we are to you, it’s only right and fair.

Gemma Dawson, a Care Assistant from Caremark (Dacorum & St Albans) recently became a home care hero during one of her calls, where she found a client in distress. “At 21:15 on Friday night, the carer arrived for her evening duty. She was concerned at my wife's serious loss of balance and decided to request an ambulance. The carer was told that there were "more important cases to be dealt with", and there was no ambulance available for several hours. The carer refused to accept this and called again. She was eventually advised the paramedics be called. After a series of tests, they found my wife had a faulty heart condition and took her straight to hospital where she stayed overnight. At around 08:30 Saturday morning, my wife was taken to another hospital from where a surgeon telephoned me to say he was going to operate immediately & give my wife a pacemaker. He agreed her Carer's diligence had saved her life! The diagnosis was: Complete heart block-emergency dual-chamber pacemaker”. Without this decisive, professional action, Gemma’s client may not have survived this ordeal.

“It is intimidating when you first go into someone’s home as you want to get everything right. The most important thing to me is getting to know each person to see what they need from me. I treat every customer like they are my own family & that's the best advice I could give anyone thinking about being a Carer." Natasha got her first glimpse of care when her grandfather needed palliative care. Seeing the dignity & respect he was given spurred her on to want to help others so she became a Care Assistant for Caremark Kirklees.
