It’s not just cricket... it’s about ensuring that those with learning disabilities and/or autistic people lead a healthy lifestyle, build social connections, and improve their lives – something core to the values of the Somerset Cricket Foundation. The Foundation piloted cricket activity partnerships with day service providers, with the aim of reaching more adults with learning disabilities. They also grew their Disability Champion Scheme, supporting member clubs to develop inclusive offers of their own. Through the Discovery Community Fund, Somerset Cricket Foundation were able to secure funding to employ an Adult Disability Participation Officer, Emily Vickery. Her role is to deliver cricket, develop the workforce, engage with local cricket clubs, provide life skill opportunities, and create fun competition. The funding also provided venue hire to help bring cricket to people as well as essential equipment.
Discovery colleagues honoured at Inspiring People Awards 2023 event An amazing group of inspiring colleagues recently gathered in Ilminster, Somerset, for the annual Discovery Inspiring People Award event. Hosted at The Shrubbery Hotel, Discovery colleagues and people supported were in high spirits to celebrate the nominations, as well as look back over the year via a video featuring BBQs, people looking after their homes and gardens, family visits and an epic pool party! The nominations themselves were truly incredible and, in some cases, life-saving support was given. Lead Support Worker Sam Platt and Support Worker Bev Stevens were deservedly given a standing ovation and were humble and emotional to have received awards.
At Discovery, we are big on helping the people we support turn their dreams into reality, so today, here is one such (true life) story… Graham, a person we support, is an avid churchgoer with a dream to have a big wedding day. The type we all dream of, including bells, bows, balloons, as well as cake, confetti, a car and everything blue, of course. However, Graham’s was always going to be different: he wanted to marry himself. The subject was never far from his lips: “Me, Graham Goodson and me…” Whether that was last week, six weeks ago, two or ten years ago; if you had a conversation with Graham, it would go like this: “Graham’s getting married soon” “Oh, are you? What you going to wear?” “Grab a blue suit.” “And what are you going to have at your wedding?” “I’m going to have the bells, I’m going to have the vicar, I’m going to have flowers…” Click on the article below to see a video of and hear more about Graham's big day!
You’ll never walk alone – Nigel’s Anfield adventure Here at Discovery, we are always looking for ways to support people to live the life they choose. So last April, when Nigel, a person we support, told his locality manager, Keinan, about his dream to go and see his beloved football team Liverpool play, Keinan set about making it a reality To hear more about the planning that took place and how fantastic the day finished, click on the link to read the full article!
