On 15 February, Leonardo announced that it is investing in a new high-technology science and engineering facility at Newcastle Helix, a ground-breaking 24-acre city centre development that brings together industry leaders, businesses, and top researchers into an internationally renowned innovation cluster. The company expects to employ over 200 people at the new site, generating over £185M of economic benefit in the region over the next ten years.
With the award of the Second-Generation Search and Rescue Aviation (SAR 2G) contract by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to Bristow, who will work in partnership with 2Excel Aviation, Leonardo UK will continue to support rescue operations over the UK for years to come. Yeovil-based Leonardo colleagues, Sophie Harrison and Kayley Manns, both took home awards in their respective categories at the Make UK 2022 Manufacturing Award finals. Sophie, a Production Material Support Planner who recently completed her Leonardo apprenticeship at our Yeovil site, was named winner of the Business Apprentice Final Year award. Kayley, a final year craft mechanical apprentice also based at the Home of British Helicopters, won the Engineering Apprentice Rising Star award.

UK industry to play key role in new Global Combat Air Programme, delivering next phase of combat air fighter jet development. The UK’s sovereign industry partners, under Team Tempest, will support the significant endeavour announced on 09 December 2022 by the Governments of the UK, Japan and Italy, which will see the three nations build a truly international programme, with a shared ambition to develop a next generation fighter aircraft under a new Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
