The German Bundeswehr has ordered a tethered balloon-based area reconnaissance system for protecting a forward operating base in Niger. Group subsidiary Rheinmetall Canada will be in charge of integrating the surveillance balloon’s sensors into the existing military C4I architecture. The system – also known as an aerostat – is already familiar to numerous soldiers and observers from previous deployments: the US armed forces have been using such area surveillance solutions for years to protect their forward operating bases. Capable of remaining aloft above the installation to be protected for extensive periods, the balloons’ highly sensitive sensors enable them to spot hostile elements even at great distances. These tethered surveillance balloons will give the Bundeswehr a new means of protecting its forces deployed in Niger. The Bundeswehr will be able to deploy this solution day and night to identify potentially hostile elements several kilometres away, making it possible to initiate necessary countermeasures on a timely basis. Experience shows that systems... Read more...
Rheinmetall has presented the German Bundeswehr with a first complete concept for the third generation of the Future Soldier – Expanded System, or IdZ-ES. The presentation was the initial outcome of a comprehensive study contract awarded to Rheinmetall in March 2021. The purpose of the study is to examine and evaluate potential improvements in the version of the IdZ-ES already in service with the Bundeswehr, with the objective of producing a complete concept for a 3rd generation IdZ-ES soldier system. It will serve the Bundeswehr as a basis for preparing solution proposals for procurement of a 3rd generation IdZ-ES. The study encompasses seven work packages, which together comprise the complete IdZ-ES system, i.e., the core system and the periphery. These of course include the command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) functions, which, among other things, are being examined regarding planned conformity with the Digitized Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) programme. ...

Britain’s Boxer programme is on a roll: exactly according to plan, welding work began today for the fabrication of prototypes and subsequent series production of the Mechanized Infantry Vehicle (MIV). Under the aegis of Artec GmbH, a joint venture of Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), this vital British wheeled armoured vehicle project is thus entering a decisive phase. Development of the four British configurations of the tried-and-tested 8x8 fighting vehicle began at the end of 2019. First milestones were already achieved in autumn 2020. As to the modular design of the Boxer vehicle the MIV Programme made use of already qualified solutions and design where ever possible. Therefore production of the first parts can be started already now...

Having already procured four Mission Master vehicles with cargo modules in the spring of 2020, the British military will now be acquiring four more Mission Masters, equipped this time with a fire support module to explore potential future capabilities...

How is the day-to-day at Rheinmetall? Let our employees tell you. Here you find the interview with Susann Kauer, Development Engineer in Switzerland. Ms Krauer, what do you do at Rheinmetall and how did you find your way to us? For two years, I have been a development engineer in the gunnery division at Rheinmetall Air Defence AG in Zurich. Before that, I have worked in the field of sensors and fire control units for five years. However, my professional career began with an apprenticeship as a design engineer with another company. This went on for 4 years and was followed by studies as a mechanical engineer, with a focus on biomechanics, as well as a station as a technical assistant at the chair for materials technology. During my first professional station as a project manager, a lot by men supported me, as this was the first phase in which women were increasingly promoted in these areas. When I subsequently joined Rheinmetall Air Defence, I particularly wanted to gain new experience, not only to gain further technical training, but also to get to know new machines...
