Rye House Power Station has three gas turbines and a steam turbine that together provide the most efficient form of thermal electricity generation. At its full output of 715MW, the station can meet the electricity needs of nearly one million people.
Damhead Creek Power Station generates 793MW of electricity which would be enough for around 1 million people. Damhead Creek is built on reclaimed industrial land. ScottishPower owns land adjacent to the station, and is currently developing plans for another efficient CCGT power station at the site — Damhead Creek 2
SP Energy Networks has completed a £22 million project to construct a major new substation in Cuerdley (adjacent to the Fiddlers Ferry power station). Now fully commissioned, the substation will boost the security of electricity supplies for over 90,000 homes and businesses in Merseyside and Cheshire.
Interesting information regarding Shoreham Power Station : Construction of the modern station has utilised several features from the old plant, such as a cable tunnel under the harbour and cooling water outfall. Shoreham's 106-metre chimney, the tallest structure in West Sussex, is on the same spot as the old brick-built stack that was demolished in 1998.
ScottishPower has moved from coal fired generation to cleaner sources of energy. You can find more information on our most recently de-commissioned sites below.
ScottishPower Generation : Cruachan Power Station is a pumped storage hydro power station operated by ScottishPower. It can produce electricity for the grid in two minutes (or just 30 seconds if its turbines are already primed on "spinning reserve").
ScottishPower Generation : ScottishPower Generation : The Galloway Hydro Scheme was the first large-scale integrated hydro-electric complex to be built in Britain for the purpose of public electricity supply. The scheme generates ‘green’ energy by harnessing the kinetic force of fast moving water from it’s catchment area of 400 square miles in Ayrshire and Galloway.
ScottishPower Generation : The Lanark Hydro Scheme, on the banks of the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, dates back to 1926 and is believed to be the oldest hydro-electric plant in the UK electricity industry
ScottishPower Generation : the Daldowie Fuel Plant, commissioned in 2002 and operated by ScottishPower subsidiary SMW Ltd, is one of the largest sludge drying centres in Europe.
