60 years ago, on the February 4th and 5th 1960, disaster struck in Billund. For the fourth time (yes indeed!) the Kirk Kristiansen family saw a part of their business go up in flames. The fire convinced Godtfred Kirk Christiansen it was time to move on and focus on the LEGO System in Play. Even though not all shared his view, the decision was made and March 1st a letter was sent to retailers to inform them on the decision: “Dear Retailers, As you will probably have seen or heard in the news reports, we have had a serious fire in our department for wooden toys, and a closer investigation of the incident has shown that the damage is far more extensive than at first assumed [...] This, along with our thoughts about the further development of the LEGO System in Play, has led us to close down our department for wooden toys, which has existed for many years. […] it has not been an easy decision to make, but we are convinced that it is the right one, as it enables us to concentrate on the unlimited possibilities of the LEGO System in Play.[…]”
Today we introduced LEGO® DOTS – our new tile-based play concept that offers a creative canvas for self-expression. To celebrate the launch, we teamed up with artist Camille Walala to design and build the 'HOUSE OF DOTS' in London. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMNi7
Thank you Mayra for being such an inspiration to all of us! After beating breast cancer, our colleague Mayra Rivera from Mexico founded Mayrita con Actitud, a foundation with the goal of motivating kids going through cancer treatment. “I have seen several cases where the prognosis actually improves when the kid has a positive and confident mind. When you give someone a reason to live it’s easier to find a reason to fight", says Mayra. Our LEGO® factory in Monterey, Mexico, is among the organisations supporting the foundation.
Our new LEGO® Campus in Billund, Denmark, well on its way 😁
From a Boyhood dream to reality - Karsten Lund, Creative Director. Karsten Lund had an idea for a game 2 years ago… now he runs our new in-house games studio — Light Brick. As a life-long self-confessed LEGO® nerd with 25 years’ experience from the gaming world, Karsten is like a kid in a candy store. “I have played with LEGO bricks for more than 40 years, and it was a boyhood dream to work for the LEGO Group. One I didn’t think would ever come true because I was in the gaming world. But I have been given the opportunity to combine 2 of my favourite things – developing games and LEGO bricks.”
