Our Culture
When you join us at National Highways you’ll soon become family with our three imperatives of safety, customer service and delivery. These underpin everything we do.
Safety is integral to our work, so it is also one of our five values and sits alongside Ownership, Passion, Integrity and Teamwork.
These values describe how we carry out our imperatives, how we treat each other, and expect to be treated, how we want to be seen as an organisation and how we do business.
Each value has a set of behaviours plus examples of how they are demonstrated by everyone within our business. Every employee is expected to live our values and demonstrate our behaviours.
Safety
Safety is both what we set out to achieve, and how we live our lives. We protect and promote the safety of our customers, our supply chain partners, and our own people every day.
Integrity
Integrity underpins how we behave as individuals. We're true to ourselves and we deliver on our promises. We are open and honest, we strive to do the right thing and we value each other’s contributions.

Develop your skills
We’re a big organisation. That means there are all sorts of fascinating projects to get involved in and ways to develop your career. You’re welcome to make the most of this by shadowing colleagues in other parts of our business and even doing secondments.

We’re a busy and complex organisation, so the best place to start to find the information you need is our intranet. We’ve made this easy to use, so whether you’re a new starter or a seasoned employee, you can find the right tools or the right person to contact in a few mouse clicks.
All the information you need
We’re extremely supportive and welcoming at National Highways, even the members of our Board, and our Chief Exec, Nick Harris are very approachable. If you have a question or a query there’s always someone who will know the answer, or they’ll know someone who will.
Nick and one of the Board members does an hour-long call on a regular basis where they talk through current issues from across the business, and answer your questions. There are regular webinars hosted by teams from different parts of the business too, and don’t worry if you miss them as recordings are on the intranet. There’s also a weekly e-newsletter update and quarterly issues of Highways magazine, providing by the internal communications team.
Work your way
At National Highways we embrace hybrid and flexible working. Our people are based across the country and many of us work from home a lot of the time, visiting offices and projects as and when our roles require it. Many people also work condensed hours to fit in with family or other commitments.
We’re big too on volunteering. We offer paid volunteering leave, enabling you to use your skills to make a difference to the communities and causes you care about. You can volunteer at any time and we have a dedicated Volunteering Hub where you can find out more.
A supportive environment
As a diverse organisation we have a number of employee networks that give a voice to often underrepresented groups of people. They’re invaluable for enabling us to shape our policies and processes so they’re inclusive, and for offering help, support and information.
