We were chosen as Net Zero Gold Champions at the Engineering Matter Awards 🏆. The award is for the work we've done with Connected Places Catapult to develop a programme to accelerate low carbon innovation on the strategic road network. On the same night, we also received a silver award for our Roadworks Innovation Competition.
We're proud to support Keep Britain Tidy's annual Great British Spring Clean. Litter clearance is a year-round challenge for us. Our teams collect litter daily, and we've mobilised volunteers across the country to join this important national effort. We're also focused on influencing behaviours to prevent littering in the first place through targeted campaigns and partnerships. Last night, our CEO Nick Harris joined one of our teams on the M3 in Surrey carrying out maintenance work on the road to keep it safe and at the same time ensuring it’s clean and tidy. Vital work like this requires lane closures that can cause delays and put the safety of our people at risk whilst they work near live traffic. Every piece of litter is an unnecessary and avoidable hazard. We're also addressing another significant issue: discarded traffic management equipment – signs, A-frames, cones and sandbags left behind after roadworks. We have recovered substantial amounts of abandoned equipment. Whether it's ensuring your organisation properly manages its equipment, volunteering for a litter pick, or simply disposing of your own waste responsibly – every action counts. What steps are you taking to keep Britain tidy? #GBSpringClean
Research fellow Yuandong Pan is part of the Roads Research Alliance, working to make our roads more resilient and helping the industry to 'change and adapt' - a key theme of this year's British Science Week. His research focuses on creating a virtual replica of our road network from multiple sources, including point clouds, RGB images, thermal images, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and artificial intelligence. Benefits include better resource allocation, reducing long-term costs, saving time and carbon reduction as the replica could predict which sections of the road need to be maintained urgently. Thank you to Yuandong Pan and all our research fellows who are striving to meet our vision for the road network. #BSW25 ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dYygXnTZ
Ready to start your career again after a two-year break? With our Returners programme, you can either continue with your previous career or do something completely different. Apply now! ▶️ https://lnkd.in/evAMWAQS #HighwaysReturners
Here at National Highways, we run a Returners programme targeting people who have had a career break of two years or more. This programme aims to get people back to work by considering their needs and adapting our approach so that returners have a smooth transition into the workplace. https://careers.nationalhighways.co.uk/jobs-you-can-do/returning-to-work/ We recently spoke with a returner about her experience, and this is what she had to say. “I had been on a career break for 4.5, nearly 5 years, and during this time I just concentrated on being a mum and the thought of going to interviews and explaining my long career break felt overwhelming and a huge sense of pressure knowing the competition I’d be faced with.” So, what is it like to work at National Highways for Leti? “I have had the pleasure of working with a great supportive team, specifically my line management, who some are part-time like myself, and understand the challenges I faced and still face with work/life balance. It is not without saying that they have been extremely flexible to my needs as a working parent, believe me when I say this doesn’t come about very often in a workplace! They have provided a gradual approach to my return to work which has helped me re-establish relationships and rediscover myself.” If, like Leti, you’ve been on a long career break and want to return to work, join our Returners programme. You will get the support you need to get your career back on track in no time.
