Pros

Low stress, straightforward work – generally not mentally taxing Good separation of work and home life – don’t take work or worries home Decent but not exceptional benefits package Free rail travel (SE network) Priv discount on national rail Final salary (DB) pension – above average overall, not the best on the market but neither the worst Shift perks – early shifts leave long afternoons free Colleagues generally decent (station-dependent) 3/4 sundays are off p/m, one full weekend per month

Cons

Understimulating work – can quickly become boring and unfulfilling Job is easy to learn but past that no clear pathway to develop knowledge and skills Shift patterns hurt work-life balance Early shifts (very early wake-ups, 5:30am start) Late shifts (lose entire evenings so no hot meals with family, 22:00 finish) Weekend work days limits time with family/friends Benefits less usable in practice due to antisocial hours. You end up not using the free rail travel facilities as much as you think Outdoor working conditions – long hours standing in open ticket halls, can get very cold Limited progression opportunities Not as many higher-paid roles available Long waits and competitive internal moves No real pay progression available Only union-negotiated increases in pay No reward for performance or development First year on only 90% pay (already modest salary) Restrictive internal hiring policies. Must wait 6 months to reapply after rejection Train driving not a reliable pathway. Highly competitive and limited attempts allowed (only several attempts before disallowed from reapplying). Workplace culture can include gossip Gates poorly programmed so certain tickets aren't sorted electronically in many cases, adding additional and unnecessary workload. For example HS1 tickets in the morning. Paper ticket electronic strip malfunctions fast Regular exposure to harmful passive smoking at stations No enclosed offices with glass separation for gateline staff which is practiced in other countries Can be unsafe at times, security only present at certain stations and only on the late turn
