Pros
Initially the company makes you feel like there are endless possibilities and that you can make a name for yourself. However, after spending over 2 years at the company it is obvious that the graduate scheme did not deliver anything that it had promised in the job description.
Cons
There are a large number of cons for this scheme. Before you apply for it, this is not a real graduate scheme. There is no real structure. The reality is is that you will start the company as a pest control technician, killing mice, rats and cockroaches, and work at ground level for up to 2 years. Promotions do not exist at Rentokil. You have to apply for new jobs within the company to progress, and go through the entire interview process. The job description seems to imply that you will automatically gain a promotion to either a field biologist, surveyor or team leader within 12-18 months. Again, this is false as you have to compete against other graduates, technicians and external sources for these positions. If you live in London there is too much competition to go anywhere fast, however, a few of the graduates have made these positions. Others leave when they realise that it is going to be very difficult to achieve this. Along with this, I had issues with being paid correctly and for 2 months I was not even paid and had to chase it up. I know other people have had issues with being paid commission for sales properly. My experience of management at Rentokil was terrible. Line managers and team leaders have too much work and have no time for technicians. I would spend weeks with only small amounts of contact from management. Obviously they have no time for the development of each of their technicians either. Talking to other employees also made me realise how inherently bad the management is at all levels at Rentokil, and why retention levels are so bad. In summary, I would not recommend this graduate scheme, even if it is your last option. There are better jobs out there and unless you want to be treated poorly, paid badly and have no life at all due to the vast amounts of work as you progress, then do not apply for this scheme,
