Pros

The people are what makes the business tolerable & the discount is decent

Cons

There seems to be a lack of progression opportunities within the company, and it appears that management/ leadership displays bias towards certain individuals from upper-middle class backgrounds, giving them an unfair advantage- especially in terms of pay & progression. Additionally, the micromanagement style has made it challenging to thrive for most team members as most of management haven’t developed the necessary skills to be in their position. Despite the emphasis on well-being, the workload has led to burnout with team members taking on more work whilst at full capacity & no pay incentive whatsoever. Moreover, there have been multiple instances where ideas were used without credit, hindering professional growth for team members & only supporting management’s growth. Leadership also puts too much trust behind senior/ mid-senior staff members who are preconceived in their thinking & strategy.. some also openly enjoy catty back handed gossip whilst appearing well spoken & friendly in front of leadership. Director level involvement also hinders creativity/ innovation & actual growth for the business.. there’s a lot of random demands that often leads to team members having to work under unnecessary time constraint & stress, on tasks that drive no real value/ money

Pros

I made some really great friends there (nice people stick together as they are few and far between)

Cons

Terrible Management, Terrible HR. If you take an issue to HR they side with your manager no matter how unprofessional or inappropriately they are behaving at work (including lying about company policies and falsifying paperwork) Senior Management are rude and literally do not acknowledge anyone below a certain pay grade. Anxiety/Stress and Mental Health issues are rife among the staff. I cannot express strongly enough how much I would recommend avoiding getting a job here. I am now working in a much better company and little things like being treated like a person are still a novelty to me!

Pros

Other than the fact I met a couple of nice people in the same position as me, I simply cannot think of any pros.

Cons

There so many individual incidents if could write here but the list would be too long. So I'll select a few. Long hours, I got put on constant night shifts(1-10,2-11) with one unpaid break sometimes after two hours sometimes after 7 hours?! They decided out of the blue not to pay me when they said they would and pay me two months later, which can ruin your life for a small period of time. I was very ill and sick and got told to take more than the advised dosage paracetamol(dangerous and unhelpful) and told I was not allowed to leave. I was told to have a moment in the office as I was crying, one of the managers came in, never asked why I was crying if I was ok and told me to get out and on the shop floor because people's shifts were finishing. Most days included being patronised, spoken to with zero respect. Management is corrupt, has no organisational skills or in fact any relevant skills for the job. Staff below management are undervalued and there's a general feeling of over inflated self importance and a rather sad desperate sense of struggle to maintain image. I cannot stress how much I would NOT recommend working for Selfridges.
