Pros

1) Flexible Working. 2) Great Location.

Cons

1) Tedious and soulless colleagues. 2) Line Managers - the worst Line Manager I have ever had the misfortunate of working under unfortunately was at UCL (in SLMS). 3) If you are BAME and especially a BAME male prepare for isolation and indirect racism. 4) Favouritism in the workplace is rampant. 5) If you're not a brown-noser this isn't the place for you, you won't go anywhere here 6) Workplace full of soulless pen pushing beaurocrats. 7) Overworked and underpaid. 8) You will likely be quickly regretting your decision to take on admin role (specifically teaching administrator role). 9) Have to jump through hoops to get simple things done as it needs approvals from a hundred different middle persons. 10) Rotten soul destroying workplace environment - just no fun at all coming into office every morning.

Pros

Good amount annual leave Some good lower level managers that care about their staff progressing and developing.

Cons

-Most of the ‘old school’ Academics seem to think it’s OK to bully their Programme Administrators and lie to get what they want. Senior management would rather move the several Administrators on elsewhere, rather than correct the clear behavioural problems of academics. -Academics have often asked me to throw their rubbish out, assuming I’m also a cleaner. -Academics are against change, most will be there until death and don’t wish to learn anymore. -Clear favouritism shown by senior management -No time for staff development or training -Don’t bother raising concerns with HR as they are too busy dealing with the various cases of sexual harassment in the workplace (or they’re on stress leave or holidays).

Pros

Access to great equipment with a diverse workforce.

Cons

PIs are not trained as managers. There is a culture of bullying, with little in the way of support for those who have experienced bullying or harassment. Complaints are handled internally by those who are often directly linked with those who are accused of poor behaviour. This limits confidentiality and often results in retaliation.
