At BAE Systems we are committed to supporting employees and our UK business is an accredited ‘Menopause Friendly Employer’. We partner with experts Henpicked to raise awareness of menopause symptoms and provide resources and training to help create a working environment that supports everyone to be the very best they can be. "Menopause has been a taboo subject for far too long. With three in four women experiencing a wide range of symptoms, we will all be touched by it - if not ourselves, then as partners, sons and daughters, friends, colleagues and line managers. It’s important that we’re able to have open, respectful conversations about menopause so nobody feels they have to suffer in silence, or mask what they’re going through. It’s an important part of building an inclusive workplace in which we support one another to be our best." - Sir Simon Lister, UK & RoW Gender Sponsor and BAE Systems Managing Director for Naval Ships
Our chief data officer Johanna Hutchinson did not follow what many may think of as a conventional route into a career in data and technology. From studying biology and psychology at university, working as a primatologist in the jungles and rainforests of Central Africa and Brazil to discovering the power of statistics at the Office for National Statistics, these experiences gave her important transferrable skills that saw her playing a key role in the UK Government’s Covid response. Johanna recently sat down with Computer Weekly to chat about her fascinating career so far, the ever increasing importance of interoperability and diversity in data and why the defence sector is well placed to drive significant progress in the field.
