It is with great pleasure that we extend a warm welcome to our newest cohort of Trade Apprentices as they embark on their career in the construction industry. The cohort will spend the next 18 months 'earning and learning' by combining practical on-site work and educational workshops at college to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become a qualified Bricklayer or Site Carpenter. Our Apprentices represent the next generation of skilled tradespeople who will play a crucial role in shaping the UK's future built environment. We are proud to nurture these talented individuals and provide them with the tools they need to excel in a prosperous career in housebuilding. If you're interested in an apprenticeship that empowers you to 'earn while you learn' and qualify with a high-demand trade, read more about our Apprenticeships here. #BarrattDevelopments #TradeApprentices #CareersinConstruction
We are delighted to welcome the 2023 ASPIRE Graduate cohort into our business this week! Across the next two years on the programme, they will have the opportunity to rotate into different areas of our business and work on impactful projects for our business and the community. Additionally, each graduate will undertake personal and professional development through specific training modules focusing on leadership skills and technical knowledge required to become an impactful leader. Aided by the support of a network of current and previous ASPIRE graduates and their mentors, we are all excited to see their individual growth and celebrate their successes together. For more information about what our graduates get involved in, please see the link to our ASPIRE Graduate brochure.
On Tuesday, the 8th of August, we hosted our 'Career Development Day', an opportunity to bring together our talented individuals that have recently graduated from the 'ASPIRE Graduate Programme' and 'Degree Apprenticeship Programmes'. The day provided an opportunity to mark our apprentices and graduates numerous achievements and network with both familiar and new faces. Attendees reflected on their professional and personal growth since joining the programme and considered the next steps to achieve their career aspirations. They heard from senior leaders David Thomas, Bukky Bird and Andy George sharing insights from their own career paths and offering invaluable advice. Congratulations to all that attended the day; we can't wait to see your future development and where your career paths lead you. #barrattcareers #careerdevelopment #earlycareers
We aim to support our employees in achieving their goals, both within & outside of work. Cian O’Donnell, Technical Manager for Barratt West London is a great example of how we look to provide this support, having received sponsorship from the company to support his athletic pursuits: “I started sprinting around six years ago whilst at Strathclyde University. Over this period, I have improved my 100m time from 12.05 to 10.41 seconds & my 200m time from 24.50 to 21.13 seconds. These times now put me around rank 45th in the UK currently & 190th all-time in the UK. The Scottish Championships has always been the biggest competition for me as it is where I grew up & over the last few years I have progressed from only making the heats, to making semis, to now having 3 bronze medals & 2 silver medals in the 60/100/200m events. As I have gotten better at sprinting, the available margin for improvements become harder to achieve & the cost of these goes up as well. I am so grateful that Barratt have given me financial support. It that makes a big difference in helping to make sure I have regular access to physios, sports massages, new running spikes, travel costs & competition fees.” Not only does this sponsorship help Cian achieve his personal goals, it also supports his work at Barratt: “I always feel better about work the more time I can get into training. Managing a good work life balance & being active outside of work always helps to be able to bring my best self to work."
At Barratt Developments, investing in our people is a priority. Whether it is through our early careers, career changers or experienced hire pathways, we recognise the importance of offering a wide variety of development opportunities to support our colleague’s personal & professional growth. Muneni Chirinda joined our ASPIRE graduate programme in 2016 following an undergraduate placement and has recently been promoted to Technical Manager in our East London division. This week we took the time to speak to him about his development journey: “I got to work on my own small site, research projects with Group Technical and give a presentation in the divisional results seminar – earning me an individual excellence award in my first 6 months. I stayed in Nottingham for another year, working part time while completing my degree then joined the ASPIRE programme in the East London division.” During his time on the ASPIRE graduate programme, Muneni completed a secondment into our Corporate Affairs team, & even project manage his cohort’s Million Makers charity fundraising project. Muneni now leads Mosaic, our internal employee network for colleagues from ethnically diverse backgrounds, whilst working on Ridgeway View in Mill Hill: “I have been fortunate to be on the site since it started being built in 2018, from demolition of the former national institute of medical research to now building a facsimile of the iconic structure 5 years later.”

It's Men's Health Week! We're pleased to announce a new partnership with the 'Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity' to bring wellbeing advice, help and support to our site-based teams as well as our sub-contractors. For the first time, the charity will run its 'Make it Visible' campaign at our construction sites, with the Lighthouse Club team on hand to share some of their lived experience and to provide on-the-day support and signposting colleagues to further information. We want to continue to open up the conversation about wellbeing and in particular mental health in construction and we want to take this opportunity to further shine a light on the importance of talking and seeking help and support when needed. #menshealthawarenessweek #healthandwellbeing #lighthouseclub
