As part of our commitment to build a more diverse workforce, we attended Future Opportunities for Women in Construction last week to highlight the many benefits of a career in the homebuilding industry. The event, hosted by The Skills Centre and supported by TTLP, Transport for London's new property company, offered women the chance to hear from a range of businesses about how they are working to improve diversity in the industry, the variety roles and opportunities available and how they build a successful and rewarding construction career. Having hosted a meet and greet session, Lauren Potter, Head of Land at Barratt London, said: "It was a pleasure representing Barratt alongside a team of inspiring women from around the business, all with the shared goal of encouraging more women to join or progress their careers with Barratt or within the industry." #womeninconstruction #buildingwithoutbarriers #barrattdevelopments
This year our 2022 ASPIRE graduate cohort will be supporting the Prince’s Trust through their annual Million Makers challenge. Million Makers is a competitive fundraising challenge with the aim of raising as much money as possible for The Prince's Trust - a charity focusing on improving the lives of young people aged 11 to 30. The challenge allows companies from across the UK to compete in their teams to produce several events with the collective goal of exceeding 1 million pounds. Whilst the fundraising period has not officially started, our graduates have been hard at work developing a business plan detailing their charity initiatives, which will be presented at a Dragon’s Den-style pitch with the Prince’s Trust in June. Join us in wishing our graduates the best of luck in their fundraising efforts for this very worthy cause! #millionmakers #theprincestrust #charity
Mental Health Awareness Week is currently underway and, whilst we should take care of our mental health 365 days of the year, it acts as a reminder to us all to prioritise our mental health and support family, friends and colleagues to do the same. In support of this week, we’re offering a series of webinars to our colleagues covering a breadth of topics in support of mental health. We are also proud to announce that Barratt is now a supporter of the Zero Suicide Alliance. The Alliance is a charitable organisation dedicated to preventing suicide by breaking the stigma that surrounds this subject. Every life lost to suicide is one too many and the construction sector is more impacted than most. Our partnership with Zero Suicide Alliance means that we are now able to offer bite-sized training to our colleagues covering how to spot warning signs, how to have a conversation with someone you are worried about, and where to signpost for further support. #MHAW #mentalhealth #zerosuicidealliance
Our Barratt Foundation are proud to be working with Sheffield Hallam University to offer 9 scholarships and 60 bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, underrepresented groups, and those that have suffered significant hardship on their route to higher education. Earlier this year, Andy Button-Stephens, Head of the Barratt Foundation and Andy George, Head of Talent Management, took the time to meet with our scholars to hear about their experiences at university, the difference our donation is making and understand what additional support the business could provide to help their ongoing education and future careers. The Barratt Foundation supports good causes right across the country, helping charities and local communities when they need it most. This Friday our employee network ‘Mosaic’ will be marking Eid al-Fitr with a virtual celebration aimed at building a space for reflection, where colleagues can share their experiences and come together during this important time. The event will be focusing on the meaning behind Eid al-Fitr, why it is important, and we will be joined by a panel of our Muslim colleagues answering some questions, and leading the conversation. This year Eid al-Fitr fell on Friday the 21st April and marked the end of the month of Ramadan. Muslims worldwide spend this time with family and friends, exchanging gifts, praying, and enjoying food. Festivities can last anywhere between one and three days depending on where in the world you live. During this time you can greet your colleagues by saying 'Eid Mubarak' (ee-d mu-bar-ak) which roughly means 'Have a blessed Eid'. #eid #mosaic #diversityandinclusion
This month we’ve been highlighting the importance of getting active as a way to support our teams’ health and wellbeing, with a particular focus on those in desk-based roles. Exercise has a range of benefits for both our physical and mental health, so at Barratt Developments we aim to support our colleagues in leading an active lifestyle by providing access to a range of health-focused flexible benefits (such as ‘Cycle to Work’ and gym memberships) and building awareness of a range of fitness programmes. In addition to this, April also marks the launch of our Big Barratt Hike – a mass-participation event that encourages colleagues from across the business to test their physical limits with a challenging but achievable route, all whilst socialising with colleagues from around the business and raising money for charity. Look out for more information on the hike later in the year… #health&wellbeing #gettingactive #flexiblebenefits

Last week our 2021 ASPIRE Graduate cohort attended the Million Makers National Finals to celebrate the success of fundraising teams from across the UK in raising money for the Prince’s Trust. Not only did the cohort raise a fantastic £128,251 for a very worthy cause, but they also won two awards on the night, picking one up for the highest total raised in the built environment sector, as well as the ‘Innovation Award’ for one of their fundraising initiatives. In total, teams managed to raise a staggering £2,364,692 this year, which will be used to change the lives of young people across the UK.
