Big Blue Bike Ride - Windsor on Sunday 8th September 2024
Day Group helps build a tunnel! As part of our ongoing supply contract with Riverlinx, the Greenwich team delivered a large-scale Cement Bound Granular Mixture (CBGM) order for Tarmac National Contracting, who secured the surfacing sub-contract for the project. Riverlinx is the principal contractor appointed to construct the new tunnel which is built under the Thames, linking Silvertown to the Greenwich Peninsula in East London. Set to open in 2025, it will help to reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel, deliver faster and more reliable journeys, improve air quality and public transport links with more cross-river bus services, and enable more cycle journeys. To date we have supplied 135,000 tonnes of various aggregates, removed 100,000 tonnes of soil and recycled 16,000 tonnes of C&D waste derived from site. Commencing in July, Day supplied 9,500 tonnes of CBGM over a 7-day period which included night and weekend production. The CBGM was a mix of 0/20mm Glensanda Granite and Portland Cement. This was a logistical challenge and credit is due to the team at Greenwich who successfully managed the large importation of aggregate and cement, producing large volumes through the plant seamlessly. The finished product was collected from the plant by Tarmac on walking floor artic vehicles and discharged into two asphalt paving machines within the tunnel.
On Saturday 20th July 2024 Day Aggregates were invited to the Worthing Fire Station's annual event at Broadwater Green and the Fire Station to raise funds for local good causes and the Fire Fighters Charity. At the event, demonstrations were conducted to enhance safety awareness regarding fires, road traffic collisions, and other emergencies. We were joined by Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and other agencies and council services. The event was educational and successful. An exclusive time slot between 09:00 and 10:00 was reserved for individuals with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) to enjoy the event before it became too busy. Special thanks to the team for helping to promote the 'exchanging places' and cycle safety messages to the thousands who attended this annual event.
At the end of last month, Day Aggregates attended the IBMG (Independent Builders Merchants) South-East Conference at Leonardo Royal Hotel, Brighton. The business has an increasingly strong relationship with the group. They have quickly become our 2nd largest merchant customer and have impressive loose sales as well as bagged. The event consisted of a trade morning followed by a speed networking session with key staff members from their 40 depots across South East England. Later in the day and awards dinner was held where we were proudly presented with the HBM Supplier of the Year. Before being announced winners it was commented that 'when Day Aggregates is ever mentioned, it is only ever in a positive light'. A huge well done to Dan Williams and other colleagues who have contributed to this success.
On Thursday 23rd May the new Wellingborough Depot was officially opened by MP Gen Kitchen. Gen Kitchen, MP for Wellingborough, said: "I'm delighted to formally open this facility, which represents a significant investment into our region. I’m passionate about the potential of this area as a hub for business, due to its central location, transport links and strong industrial track record. It’s also important that we ensure commercial activity is sustainable and this aggregate manufacturing facility is an excellent example of that, taking a residual material that would previously have been discarded and turning it into a useful material that supports local construction. It’s vital that we promote a more circular economy in this way." A special thanks to the site team who spent many hours cleaning and preparing the site for the successful opening.
Back in August 2023, Day Aggregates took part in an “Exchanging Places” event at Three Bridges Primary School. It is an award-winning programme which is run by the Metropolitan Police Cycle Task Force and the City of London Police, which offers cyclists the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV). The objective of the event is to get the cyclist to realise how difficult it can be to see a cyclist riding close to the lorry. This programme has been rolled out in other boroughs and we are very excited to bring it to The London Borough of Hillingdon. Based on Exchanging Places, we developed a programme to contribute towards educating young children about road safety in schools and via roadshow events. Whilst road safety is already part of the national curriculum, our aim is to enhance these lessons to impress upon children and young people how lorries can be dangerous. Lorries are involved in an increasing percentage of fatal traffic accidents on Britain's roads. Day Aggregates feels very strongly about the importance of early education to reduce accidents.
After breaking ground at our new site in November 22, 15 months later we have started processing IBA. Thanks to all those involved in the build from - a great TEAM effort.
We are honoured to be the recipient of the ‘Outstanding Delivery Company’ award from Balfour Beatty. Day Aggregates stood out amongst other companies involved in the project for our dedication, improvement process and willingness to help and share best practice. We also congratulate our delivery drivers, Edward Hynes and David Gibson who were awarded the ‘Right First Time’ and ‘Home, Safe and Well (Zero Harm)’ awards respectively, as highly recommended by others working on the project. The purpose of the awards ceremony is to reward companies for their efforts in reducing reportable incidents whilst delivering to site. We were recognised for expertly delivering primary and recycled materials to the M25/J10 interchange project which we have supplied with more than 180,000t so far.

Mark Norris & Colin are now leading a new site team bringing the plant up to full production over the coming weeks.
The Transport Team has been out in the Worthing community, supporting Sussex Safer Roads with their Exchanging Places initiative once again. Members of the public were invited to enter the truck and gain insight into what our drivers see when driving the tractor unit. The aim was to demonstrate where the blind spots exist by use of the black mat which indicates the places where cyclists and pedestrians are more difficult to see.
