How do Ocado’s robots pick your shopping? We welcomed the BBC to one of our highly automated warehouses to find out. From the robotic picking arms powered by computer vision to the thousands of bots collaborating like a swarm on the grid, take a sneak peek at our innovation in action.
Wireless technology is what allows our AI ‘air traffic’ control to communicate 10x per second with our fast-moving bot fleet as they whizz across grids. This means that having the best wireless signal quality is crucial for peak performance when picking customer orders! But with unique warehouse layouts, complex obstructions and dynamic moving parts, traditional wireless applications don’t make the cut. We’ve taken an innovative approach to tackling this challenge. Optimised routing means faster deliveries, fewer vehicles and lower fuel emissions. But with endless route possibilities as well as constraints such as vehicle capacities and timings to consider, the challenge is mind-boggling. A single facility on a single day might have 2000 orders and 100 vans - that’s 10 to the power of 3897 possible route permutations (compared to 10 to the power of 82 atoms in the universe)! Earlier this month, we announced an investment in, and technical partnership with, autonomous mobility start-up Wayve. Developing autonomous vehicle solutions capable of navigating unstructured urban environments is an incredibly complex undertaking. Our Advanced Technology teams are on an exciting journey to meet this challenge. Our partnership with Wayve will help accelerate these capabilities. Wayve’s innovative camera-first approach underpinned by end-to-end deep learning technology requires no pre-programming and enables vehicles to adapt to situations that have not been encountered before. We’ll be working closely together to test and evaluate the performance of the technology on real-life urban delivery routes. A portion of Ocado UK delivery fleet will also be equipped with data collection devices to provide vast datasets to train Wayve’s systems. We’re excited to be pioneering the future of last mile automation and to deliver transformative benefits to our OSP partners.
