We've announced a £58 million investment in our Walkers Leicester factory – our biggest investment in the UK in the last 25 years. Our factory in Leicester is one of the world’s biggest crisp factories and home to Walkers crisps and snacks, which celebrates its 75th birthday this year. The investment will see a new manufacturing line installed, the replacement of existing machinery with more sustainable equipment, as well as an extensive upgrade of employee facilities for the site’s 1,120-strong workforce.
We're trialling new multipack packaging for our Snack A Jacks range. Packs on shelves in Tesco stores across the UK will now use 86% less plastic on their outer packaging when compared with the previous multipack design. In a first for Snack A Jacks, the new ‘bagless’ multipack is made from a tape-like strip which holds together five individual packets of Snack A Jacks.
We’ve taken further steps on our health journey to reduce salt with the success of Walkers 45% Less Salt* which was our first potato crisp to not be classified as high in fat, salt or sugar when it launched last year. Walkers 45% Less Salt has already become a hit with UK consumers and despite only launching last year, the new range has become a £30 million brand and estimated to be in over 16% of UK households.
We've made significant progress towards achieving our 2025 health ambition, as 30% of our Walkers sales are now from healthier snacks. In April 2022, we set out an ambition to make 50% of Walkers snack sales come from healthier alternatives by 2025, targeting 30% to come from products that do not classify as high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) and 20% from snacks sold in portions of 100 Calories or less per packet.
We’re introducing electric trucks to transport Walkers crisps between our Coventry and Leicester sites in a more sustainable way, thanks to a partnership with the freight mobility technology company Einride. Starting from July, we will initially deploy two electric trucks powered by Einride’s advanced technology between the two Midlands factories, which are home to our core Walkers crisps, Doritos, Wotsits and several other favourite Walkers snacks.
Quaker is teaming up with charity partners and Asda on new initiatives to provide warm and nutritious breakfasts to support local communities this winter.
We're continuing our global agriculture accelerator, the Positive Agriculture Outcomes (PAO) Fund, by giving grants to 14 business projects across 11 countries - including two in the UK - to address some of the most intractable challenges facing agriculture today.
We announced a £14 million investment in new sustainable food packaging innovations that will remove 250 tonnes of virgin plastic from our supply chain annually.
We’re delighted that we’ve been named one of the Times Top 50 Employers for Women for the 17th year running, demonstrating our continued commitment to gender equality.
