Today marks a major milestone for Britain’s clean energy transition. We’re joining SSE Thermal, Equinor and Centrica in launching Humber Hydrogen - a coordinated bid to develop Britain’s first regional hydrogen transport and storage network across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The Humber is the UK’s most carbon intensive industrial cluster and is well placed to lead Britain’s hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is a win-win solution for British industry - bolstering our energy security, supporting decarbonisation and securing the long-term future of critical industries. The fuel will be critical in protecting and creating new jobs, attracting new businesses, and unlocking clean power. Several large-scale hydrogen projects are proposed in the region, with the potential to produce up to 3GW of low carbon hydrogen, alongside a 420 million m3 storage facility in Aldbrough. We want to bring our expertise in gas pipelines to transport hydrogen between producers, storage facilities, major industrial users and power stations across the Humber. Together, with our Humber Hydrogen partners, we will enter a competitive process and submit proposals for the Humber Hydrogen Pipeline and Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage to the UK Government’s Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Models process, led by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The opening of our new Peterborough regional headquarters marks a significant milestone for National Gas and the communities we serve. It’s more than an office opening; it’s the start of an £870 million investment in the East of England over the next five years. We’re investing in 300 careers in addition to creating 250 new jobs, and upgrading critical infrastructure to ensure our network remains the backbone of Britain’s energy system while evolving for a cleaner, more resilient future. Cambridgeshire has already benefited from a significant investment with Peterborough receiving a share of a £350 million investment to build two new compressors, which are both more efficient and hydrogen-blend ready, and there are advancing plans for a third. None of this progress happens in isolation. It’s the result of collaboration - with the UK Government, our regulators, industry, supply chain, and local communities - and the dedication of our colleagues and partners who make it possible. As we look ahead, this investment is about more than infrastructure. It’s about skills, jobs, and opportunities for the next generation. NEWS: National Gas has today (Thursday 4th December) received its final determination for RIIO-GT3 (2026-2031) from Ofgem. The final determination sets out the investment and outcomes we will deliver through to March 2031. Our plan, shaped by customers and stakeholders, aligns with Ofgem and the Government’s ambition to deliver a secure, resilient gas transmission infrastructure that supports a low-cost transition to a clean energy system. Our initial assessment indicates that Ofgem has allowed a baseline funding level of £3.2 billion, following a draft determination of £2.46 billion, with scope for significant further allowances to be granted within the regulatory period. Over the past few months, our teams have worked extensively and constructively with Ofgem to provide additional evidence on the case for further investment in Britain’s national gas network to safeguard our country’s energy security and deliver benefits for consumers....Show more

Project Union is our vision for a core hydrogen network that will decarbonise industry, protect jobs, and secure Britain’s energy. By repurposing and building up to 1,500 miles of pipeline, we’ll connect key industrial clusters across the UK and support Britain's clean energy ambitions. In recent weeks, we've made major progress. More than 50% of our proposed core hydrogen network for Britain has received funding to proceed to advanced engineering design. Looking ahead to some major energy policy announcements in the coming months, we want to work with government to confirm a pathway towards a core hydrogen network for the whole of Britain.
