Pros

You are sold a dead dog at the recruitment stage - this is NOT a top 100 company to work for!

Cons

I worked for Iceland for 15 months, a time that I will never get back. This company is a complete joke to work for. Prior to working for them I only had 2 jobs in 20 years. This has a Tory government mentality where the multi millionaires at the top have an attitude of we will do what we want, when we want, and we will pay the fine when we get caught and move on to the next hair brain idea that's not thought through. There is NO work life balance. There is. NO time to take a break. You are expected to treat the staff like rubbish - that's how you become an "Iceland Manager" you TELL your staff that they need to stay past their time to finish a task that is impossible to complete and they will not be paid, or the consequence is you will cut their hours back to their 7.5 hour contract. There's intimidation from top all the way down. The only way I can describe it, is that for most of the colleagues this has been their 1st or only job. They are conditioned to think that this is how people are treated in retail (told it's the same everywhere else) and that they suffer from Stockholm syndrome. They are too frightened to leave and think it's great as they have a level of service they have built up that they can't afford to start over.

Pros

Customers are friendly and nice, co workers get you through your day.

Cons

Hours being cut meaning only 3 on shop floor. No time for breaks as you have to maintain availability and standards as well as go on till and pack home deliveries. I'm not afraid of hard work but the ethics of the company is wrong. Many a time I stay extra and work for free because I care and want to make sure the shop is at a high standard so customers keep coming back. I work and many others through breaks as staff is at a minimum. Soon as you try and have a break the bell goes and you are needed at till or something is off sale and you need to get it out. Theft is high as not enough staff on shop floor to deter thieves. The company needs to stop relying on the good will of staff and start paying for breaks that are not taken and overtime or at least have more staff on shop floor so we can take our breaks. The deliveries are too large for the amount of staff to do them. Most nights there two staff to sort out deliveries for 3 departments as well as pulling back stock to make the shop full for the next day in 3 hrs as well as taking out of date stock off which takes an hour. It's an impossible task. The company expects too much we are people who love working for Iceland and want to be treated properly not like animals. Yes we should be lucky we have a job but a job with no breaks, security risks and unpaid overtime is not right.

Pros

I work with a good bunch of people in my store and other store managers. I think providing you have a good Manager that doesn't make you work for free or through your breaks it's a good job for a colleague.

Cons

As a store manager I would like a certain level of autonomy. But we have no influence or decisions to make. It's all comply comply comply!! Here's how you do it, here's when you do it. Despite the lack of control we have we are 100% accountable for results such as stock loss. Very difficult to manage when the depots are very poor, you don't get a lot of the stock in but can't claim the cost back! Productivity targets are crazy. Nowhere near enough hours in the business. Most stores make the staff work for free but I refuse to do that ,only me and my senior Sup work for free. Really feel this especially around events, such as stock counts and changeovers, drastically underfunded and sometimes have to stay late into the night for free. This comes at a cost to family life. I fully understand that retail is high pace but its relentless here. As a store manager I expect to work extra hours but through choice, to drive my business, not necessity. I wouldn't mind so much if there was an incentive scheme but for store managers there is nothing. The under performers get the same wage review as high performers. Used to be a good place to work, now there is a huge fear culture. Area managers are more like auditors, they come in and check all of your implementation. Very few pleasantries, no talk about growing business or people. I like my area manager he is a good guy but they are all under so much pressure and they just end up passing that on to you but in an aggressive way. Just feels like being hit with a big stick all the time. Systems are poor and outdated, ask for extra equipment such as hht guns to help achieve and it's declined. Software on the guns is awful making it slow and painfully unproductive at times. Directors painfully out of touch or in denial with what's going on in the stores.
