Five Enfield schools provided 1,500 hungry students on Tuesday with festive-themed, healthy, burgers made with ingredients that would have otherwise been destined for the bin. Enfield Council’s school meals provider, Enfield Catering Service, teamed up with charity The Felix Project and sustainable meat producer Canvin & Catchpole to show how decent food can be made into nutritious meals, helping to reduce the millions of tonnes of food wasted each year in the UK*. Even Tottenham Hotspur FC hero Harry Kane offered support for the initiative, with a message posted on social media commending the work of Enfield Council (while sporting a festive jumper rather than his usual football kit). The ‘Ready Steady Christmas Burger Day’ also highlighted the growing injustice of school age children going without food. In London alone, 400,000 children are experiencing hunger. One of The Felix Project’s aims is to collect fresh, nutritious food that cannot be sold and deliver this surplus to charities and schools to provide healthy meals and help the most vulnerable in society.
Enfield’s ambition is to become the greenest of all London boroughs and the Council is asking for the public’s views to make this a reality. Enfield Council has launched a consultation on its Blue and Green Infrastructure Strategy , which seeks opinions on how to protect, improve and expand the borough’s network of parks, rivers, lakes, woodlands, canals, wetlands, playing pitches, allotments and more.
A new youth activities portal has been launched by Enfield Council to help some of the most vulnerable children and young adults in the borough gain new skills and fulfil their potential. The portal is understood to be the only such service launched by a local authority during the COVID-19 pandemic. It comprises of two initiatives; Youth Bubble which focuses on positive activities via Enfield Council Youth Clubs and the Inspiring Young Enfield scheme, a £1.3 million project funded by the Greater London Authority. Inspiring Young Enfield delivers a variety of intervention activities, providing support to thousands of young people living in the borough’s most deprived areas. Both programmes are co-ordinated by Enfield Council’s Youth Development Service. As the scheme matures and if COVID-19 restrictions ease, more workshops will be added and young people around the borough will be able to book themselves onto programmes using the portal’s online reservation system. Young people can check availability and register at www.enfield.gov.uk/youth.
Action against violence in Enfield to mark White Ribbon Day: Periods of lockdown have resulted in a spike in domestic violence, making this year’s White Ribbon Day more important than ever for Enfield Council and partners. Enfield Council will be joining with a number of local organisations to make sure the awareness day on 25 November can still be marked appropriately, and will be re-affirming its commitment to the White Ribbon pledge which empowers women and girls to stand up to violence and for men to prevent and reduce domestic abuse. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion, Cllr Nneka Keazor, said: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of domestic abuse cases in the United Kingdom and a similar increase in the number of incidents reported to the police, particularly during periods of national restrictions when families have been confined to their homes. “It is therefore more important than ever to remind ourselves of the White Ribbon pledge"

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Sustainability, Cllr Guney Dogan, said: “We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors.
