The 2025 Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Apprentice Automation Challenge, now in its 11th year, saw a record 17 apprentice teams compete, including nine from Leonardo. The challenge, held on 26 September at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, required teams to design and build a prototype that automates a common task. Leonardo’s "Seven Seeds" team from Luton, composed of first- and second-year apprentices, won the Peer Review award for their "Plant Buddy" — a self-watering plant pot equipped with sensors and an E-Ink display to monitor environmental conditions. The overall competition winners were "Elevation Nation" from Niftylift, while Thales’s "Mech Me Up Before You Go Go" team received the Highly Commended award. Team leader Jorja Uys praised the innovation on display across all teams, while mentor Runjie Wei congratulated Seven Seeds on their well-earned recognition.

Earlier this month, colleagues from Leonardo in Yeovil, the Home of British Helicopters, took part in and completed the Three Peaks Challenge. A team of 20 walkers and 10 volunteer drivers climbed the three highest mountains in the UK: Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales; in less than 24 hours, raising over £10,800 for #ANDYSMANCLUB and YFW Blood Bikes (Freewheelers EVS, Yeovil). This event was the 'summit' of a two-year campaign that saw our Yeovil trainees raise a total of over £42,000 for the site's two chosen charities.
Leonardo in Southampton celebrated the success of our sensor technology which has been deployed on a European Space Agency - ESA satellite. The sensors, which will enable meteorologists to provide lifesaving weather forecasts and extend climate records, are fitted to the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer New Generation (IASI-NG) instrument aboard the METOP-SG (A) weather satellite, which launched last month and is operated by EUMETSAT.
This summer, the halls of our electronics sites buzzed with excitement as hundreds of aspiring engineers attended Leonardo’s Robotics Games Tournaments around the UK.
In July, Leonardo hosted our most recent UK Supplier Sustainability Workshop at The Royal Aeronautical Society in London with an attendance of over 50 participants comprising a wide range of our UK suppliers and representatives from our UK divisions and functions.
