We've been marking Black History Month throughout the month. The theme this year is 'Saluting our Sisters' - emphasising the vital role black women have played in shaping history and inspiring change. Our Race for Change Staff Network have hosted a BHM Quiz and been posted educational content celebrating matriarchs, including a video of colleagues speaking about who the matriarchs were in their lives and what they mean to them. And we've seen our homes and schemes' educational displays and celebrations. Assisi Place retirement living gave awards and gifts to their matriarchs, including 94-year old resident Winnie.
In our care homes, our Activities Coordinators work really hard to bring new ideas, activities and day trip ideas. We spoke to Angie at Cromwell House who have recently introduced visits from local children. The residents really look forward to the day that the nursery children visit them - reading with them, singing and eating together. A simple idea that makes a lot of difference to both the residents and the children. Read the blog to find out more.
Do you know MHA has a team of over 30 Music Therapists? Music Therapists work with our care teams to provide music therapy tailored to an individual's needs. Thanks to generous funding and donations, we are able to provide one-to-one and group sessions at no extra cost to residents. See our Music Therapists in action at our 80 years celebration, watch the full service on our YouTube channel.
We launched our Fix Care For All campaign which puts our care colleagues at the heart. We aim to raise awareness of the issues carer workers face every day when providing care. Fix Care For All will raise the voice of our colleagues and demand that the Government truly values the 1.5 million people working in care. That’s why we are calling for a Social Care Council: • A new independent body that will represent care workers • To raise the esteem and profile of care work as a profession, through registration and setting standards • People working in care can come together and put forward the changes they want to see. It's World Alzheimer's Month which is important to us as a charity who supports people living with dementia. We partnered with the British Gymnastics Foundation to train colleagues in the Love to Move programme. Love to Move is an age and dementia-friendly seated gymnastics programme designed to transform the lives of people living with dementia. Find out more about how the qualification was great for Zoe's personal and professional development (whilst helping others too! Win, win!)
We had our biggest ever running team at the Great North Run yesterday! A great atmosphere for Sir Mo Farah's last race. Despite the heat and flooding, everyone did amazing! A sterling effort from #TeamMHA Here's just some of our runners after the race.
Another month, another long service award! Lydia, Care Assistant at MHA The Meadow care home has celebrated 10 years service. She said "I really enjoy working here. Listening to the residents' stories and hearing how interesting their lives were is good. “It's been a great experience so far, the team spirit and support system are great and I would definitely like to be here for another 10 years at least.” Here's to another 10 years! Join #TeamMHA and you could be celebrating too.
