The first three months of the year have delivered continued strong sales momentum and further strategic progress for Pets at Home. Group revenue increased 7.9% to £436.8m and consumer numbers grew across both our retail and vet business. Lyssa McGowan, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our performance in the first quarter has been encouraging. The quality of our growth has remained strong as we grew transaction volumes and continued to acquire new consumers at an impressive rate, as our compelling value, range and service continues to resonate with consumers. “It has also been a quarter of steady delivery against our strategic plan we set out in May. We have expanded and enhanced our physical estate, made good progress in the development of our digital platform, and continued the transition to our new distribution facility, as we execute on our ambition to build the world’s best pet care platform.”
We’re proud to announce we’ve now opened our brand-new pet care centre in Spalding, providing a one-stop destination for all pet care needs for owners and their pets. The is our first new location in the UK to open following the relaunch of our brand in April, which brings together all the elements of our pet care business: Pets at Home, Pets Grooming and Vets for Pets. Spalding Manager, Leanne Hitchin said: “We’re thrilled to be one of the first new Pets at Home locations in the UK to receive the new branding, and we can’t wait to welcome customers and their pets from the local community into our pet care centre. “We really do offer everything you need to keep pets happy, healthy, and safe, all under one roof. Whether it’s help with fitting a harness or accessing our vet or grooming services, our team are always on hand to offer expert pet care advice, support, and guidance.”
Today is the start of Pride Month, which celebrates the progress made in LGBTQ+ equality around the world and recognises the work still to be done. Pets just see people, and just like pets, whatever your background or heritage, how you look or choose to express yourself, we will welcome you. Whether you’re visiting our stores or applying for one of our jobs, everyone is welcome. Wishing our LGBTQ+ colleagues, customers, and the community a very Happy Pride Month!
Today we have released our Full Year Results for 2023. It has been another record year with some major milestones achieved including the opening of our new distribution centre in Stafford and the relaunch of our brand to bring all parts of the business closer together. Our Chief Executive Officer, Lyssa McGowan, and the wider Executive Team also shared an update on our strategy as we look ahead to the next phase of growth. Commenting on the results, Lyssa said: “Pets really are at the heart of UK homes and this was reflected in our record performance over the past year, as our compelling pet care offer continues to resonate strongly with consumers. We have a unique position as the country’s largest and only truly complete pet care provider, with more consumers trusting us to care for their pets than ever before. “Today I am also delighted to announce our updated strategic ambition to build the world’s best pet care platform. I am incredibly excited about the growth opportunity ahead, as we create a better world for pets and the people that love them.”
Last month, we gathered c.1200 colleagues from every corner of our business for ‘The Pet Care Conference 2023’ at Butlin's Resort in Bognor Regis. We’re one big family, so, for the first time, we came together as one. Our Retail, Veterinary, Grooming, Support Office and Foundation representatives were able to come together like they never have before. And what an incredible opportunity to showcase our new brand identity, as we reinforce ourselves as the one-stop destination for all pet care needs. Our fantastic leadership team ran through business updates and objectives and we heard from some inspiring and thought-provoking keynote speakers. Colleague awards were also presented to celebrate exceptional levels of service and expertise, and to individuals and teams for going above and beyond to make a difference to pets, people and the planet. A huge thank you to the Butlin's Resort team, our conference speakers and presenters, supplier partners, and of course all our fantastic colleagues and partners! We’re all for pets and supporting the people that love them most.
If you tuned into ITV on Saturday, you may have caught us on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Stephen Mulhern, a Pussycat Doll and a whole film crew descended on our Handforth Support Offices a couple of week’s ago to give one of our fantastic colleagues the opportunity to win a week off work and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Orlando, Florida. It was a great day, and fantastic for so many of our colleagues who put themselves forward to take part in the pet-themed challenges set by Stephen. A huge congratulations to our very deserving winner Debbie who works in our Facilities Team – enjoy the trip and your exciting week off work!
We understand that our commitment to and progress on diversity and inclusion will be much more effective if we collaborate with others, especially across the retail industry. That's why as we mark Race Equality Week, we are excited to announce our new membership of Diversity in Retail. Our Chief People Officer, Rachel Mooney said: "'Pets just see people’, and just like pets, whatever our colleagues’ backgrounds or heritage, how they look or choose to express themselves, they are welcome. "Pets at Home people are individuals and joining Diversity in Retail is an exciting and important opportunity for us to build on our inclusive culture and fully represent the diverse communities we live and work in. I’m looking forward to sharing our experiences and committed to learning from others to contribute to the positive impact of retail on diversity and inclusion’." #PetsatHome
Did you know it's #NationalApprenticeshipWeek? Since 2018 we have supported over 1100 people kickstart or develop their career through our incredible apprenticeship opportunities. From Veterinary Nursing through to our Data & Technology programmes and just about everything in between, we want to help you grow your career with us 💚 #PetsatHome
We're proud to share that we’ve signed up to Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust #TimeToTest campaign again this year; committing to raising cervical cancer awareness in our workplace and playing our part in preventing cervical cancer! We know that 1 in 4 people with a cervix do not attend cervical screening when invited. It can be a difficult test at the best of times, but it can be an additional challenge to fit an appointment around working. That’s why we want to support our colleagues to take time to look after their cervical health.
As we welcome in the 10th National Inclusion Week, which is dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to create inclusive workplaces, it’s time again to reflect as a business on all that we’ve achieved over the last year as we continue in our strides to become more inclusive. Our Diversity & Inclusion Lead, Gemma Parker, works with colleagues across the business to make Pets at Home as inclusive as we can be. “Last year when we marked National Inclusion Week, we focused on awareness and engagement. This year, we are turning all that awareness and engagement into actions across the business. I’m proud of how committed our colleagues are to progress around diversity and inclusion and excited about how far we’ve come and how much more we have planned! From a personal perspective, publishing our inclusion commitments was a fantastic moment. They perfectly capture our aspirations, expectations and values around diversity and inclusion and set the framework for everything else.”
