Mitie, the UK’s leading facilities management company, has launched its 2021 Social Value Report. Mitie Communities has worked with Essex County Council to manage the installation of roof mounted solar panels at 15 schools across the county. The new panels will help to significantly reduce carbon emissions and energy costs for the Council. The panels will produce around 700,000 kWh of renewable energy every year, equivalent to the energy needed to power 185 homes1, saving 180 tonnes of CO2 and around £115,000, with an estimated payback of around 10 years.
Mitie has won a new one-year contract to manage 175 Regional and Local Coronavirus Test Sites and 105 Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) across England, Scotland and Wales following a competitive retender. The new contract, worth up to £365 million over the year, will have the option to extend for up to six more months and is part of Mitie’s efforts to support the UK’s fight against Coronavirus.
Mitie has joined forces with the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology, one of the world’s leading institutes in criminology, in a pioneering partnership to undertake research into retail crime, including theft and violence against shopworkers. The innovative research will focus on how businesses can leverage technology, such as remotely monitored CCTV and real-time security alerts for shopworkers, in combination with Security Officers on the ground to reduce retail crime. The initiative is the first of its kind in the UK and demonstrates Mitie’s commitment to work with public and private sector organisations to help keep the nation safe.
According to new research from Mitie, over two thirds (70%) of people who have served in the military and moved into facilities management reported that FM roles were a good match for the skills they developed in the forces, while more than three quarters (77%) said they would recommend the sector to other armed forces leavers. A new report, ‘Mobilising veterans in the facilities management industry’, shows both veterans and managers in the FM industry agree that the sector is a natural match for former servicemen and women. With over 20,000 veterans leaving the armed forces every year to join the civilian workplace, the report looks at how the FM industry can better support our armed forces leavers.
From growing the crops and feeding the cattle through to packaging, transporting and throwing away waste, food-related emissions are estimated to account for over one third of the world’s greenhouse emissions1. In a move to minimise this impact, Mitie, together with its food partner apetito, has launched a new low carbon emissions menu for patients at St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which will help save up to 23 tonnes of CO2 every year.
