Last year, our Procurement team were double award winners! 🎉 They took home the prize for ‘best initiative to deliver social value through procurement’ at the CIPS - The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply awards and for 'developing supplier diversity' at the GO Awards. For organisations with primarily social objectives, our Social Enterprise Dynamic Purchasing System makes bidding for contracts easier. This is what Amey had to say about their experience procuring Recycling Lives Charity 👉 "Working with National Highways and Recycling Lives to extend our relationship has been incredibly easy and delivered tangible benefits to people and society. We’re looking forward to increasing the impact we can have together in the future.” https://nationalhighways.co.uk/suppliers/becoming-a-supplier/social-enterprises/
🎉 The finalists have been announced for this year's #NationalHighwaysIndustryAwards. We look forward to announcing the winners in March. To see the shortlist, visit: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/suppliers/national-highways-industry-awards/
We recently had the pleasure of hosting Adam, a young autistic man with a keen interest in lighting and motorways, at our North West Operations Centre. Adam had reached out to us more than 30 times in two months so he was invited to take a look behind the scenes. We explained our approach to lighting columns and managing operations, including setting signs and signals. It was a rewarding experience for all involved, but most especially Adam who left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of what we do to keep the country moving.

A huge congratulations to Julian Horsler, Equality and Diversity Inclusion Manager, for receiving an MBE in the New Years Honours List. Jules received the award for his tireless work in giving disabled customers from all backgrounds a voice. He is currently the driving force behind our approach in ensuring our network is accessible and inclusive for all customers. “By bringing people together we've been able to help close any gaps in our collaborative efforts,” he said. “The Roads for All Forum is now a coalition of 20 organisations dedicated to improving accessibility. I'm proud of the part I played in setting it up and of developing our partnerships with Disabled Motoring UK and AccessAble.”
We've delivered the UK's lowest carbon resurfacing scheme on our network, thanks to a cutting-edge trial on the A64! Together with Tarmac and other partners, we reduced carbon emissions on the project by 75% compared to traditional maintenance of projects on a similar scale. The reduction was achieved by using: ➡️ low carbon materials ➡️ electric transportation ➡️ sustainable manufacturing techniques
We've signed a landmark agreement with Natural England to help achieve our 2050 vision of a connected country that also conserves the natural environment around our roads. Where better to sign it, than on our A417 landscape-led scheme which will include the largest green bridge in the country and two planted dual-use crossings. The project also uses recycled materials and has dedicated bat underpasses, bird fencing and much more!
🎖️Our Award-winning Roads Academy Leads the Way into 2025🎖️ From reaching 500+ leaders from 90 diverse organisations in our community to achieving victories at industry awards ceremonies (winning the “Developing the Next Generation of Collaborative Leaders” award at the ICW Awards and being highly commended in the “Training Provider of the Year” category at the CMI Awards), it’s been a tremendous year for Roads Academy. There has been a lot to celebrate, and what better way to close out the year than through the annual Graduation ceremony. Congratulations again to our Class of 2024 graduates and a huge thank you to everyone who helps to make Roads Academy the success that it is, from our Federated Advisory Board and Roads Academy Delivery Team to all of our supplier organisations across the sector. Our purpose is to continue to develop our leadership capability of current and future leaders, and we look forward to continuing this in 2025.
