Using innovation to manage hazards and keep road users safe is at the centre of what we do. That’s why, after sifting through some 50 applications, we will be working with six small or medium enterprises who have pitched some innovative ideas to keep our roads safe. 📱 Esitu Solutions will be developing a virtual reality training course as a downloadable app for the Meta Quest headset to promote safer and more considerate driving. For those wanting to experience some of their virtual reality technology, Esitu Solutions will be on our stand for Highways UK 2024! 📞 VESOS Solutions Ltd has developed TeCall to harvest eCall data automatically sent after collisions or breakdowns. ⛐ VivaCity sensors provide data on hazardous interactions between road users (near misses), enabling safety teams to understand the causation of conflicts and collisions and enable better and more timely interventions to be planned. ⚠️ Roadside Technologies Ltd is developing an automated hazardous object detection solution using the latest in sensing technology, to improve road user safety and enable smoother journeys through temporary work zones on roads. 🛑 CrossTech has developed a stopped vehicle detection verification system. ⏱️ Valerann’s real-time road data analytics platform enables proactive management of incidents and risks on the road. Between now and November, the six finalists will deliver their ideas in trials working with National Highways and its supply chain.
Good news! Our ambitious net zero targets have been validated by the by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We’re the first national road network operator in the world to achieve this accreditation. The news comes as we launch National Highways’ third Carbon Week. Over the next five days we’ll be highlighting how we’re achieving our net zero targets using innovative materials, equipment and ways of working. #NHCarbonWeek
We're honoured to have received the Carer Confident Active Award. This was for our work in supporting our colleagues who are balancing work alongside being a carer. We'll continue to build a diverse and inclusive working environment where individuals can bring their whole self to work and thrive. #WhoWeAre
To kick off #NHNatureWeek, we want to highlight that we're on course to achieve our 2020 commitment of halting the decline of biodiversity across our activities by 2025. In the next 5 years, we plan to deliver at least a 10 per cent net gain in biodiversity on our major enhancement projects delivered between 2025 and 2030. Today we are celebrating the first year of #WorldEngineeringDay for Sustainable Development, which focuses on celebrating the important contributions of engineers to modern life and sustainable development. We want to highlight the great work that researchers are doing to help us achieve our goals. Moro Sabtiwu, who is studying Long Term Performance of Concretes Exposed to Severe Environments for a PhD, estimates a significant amount of the UK infrastructure budget is allocated to the maintenance, repair, or replacement of aging infrastructure. This is mainly associated with damage of the concrete and/or its steel reinforcement, typically induced by the CO2 present in the air or chlorides present in sea water. As part of Moro’s doctorate, he says the unplanned repair of infrastructure within the transport network can cause major disruptions to customers, at a great financial cost, particularly if the integrity of the concrete structures is compromised. Moro said: “There is an imminent need to elucidate the degradation mechanism of concrete infrastructure to identify intervention strategies for minimising its maintenance and increasing service life and assess the suitability of novel low carbon concretes for their application in critical infrastructural projects."
“The Returners Programme provided me with a structured and supported pathway back into the workforce. The programme included coaching sessions, training, and development opportunities. These resources were incredibly valuable in helping me refresh my skills, build my confidence, and adapt to a new career. The support and guidance I received from my coaches and colleagues were instrumental in my successful transition.” - Assistant Project Manager
Last week we celebrated the accomplishments of our first cohort of graduates from the refreshed Roads Academy with our first graduation ceremony in London. We welcomed over 100 Roads Academy graduates and special guests to celebrate their success.
It's #NCSW23! This National Customer Service Week, we want to highlight the great work that our front-line services do to keep road users safe. These teams work around the clock, helping people plan the best route for their journey, sharing information about roadworks and traffic conditions, assisting people who’ve broken down and making sure the roads we manage remain in a safe condition.
Congratulations to Dr Nicolette Formosa! The Women's Engineering Society has recognised her as one of the UK's Top 50 Women in the sector. We talked to her during the #BigBangFair, where she spoke about her achievement and how important it is to encourage more women to consider a career in the industry.
Last week, our Leading Women's network partnered with Sopra Steria to come together at an event at the London Transport Museum to create a positive space for women across the transport sector to share ideas and experiences. Colleagues from across National Highways, our delivery partners and beyond enjoyed a thought-provoking day where we touched on key aspects of building mental resilience, developing a thriving mindset, the importance of driving innovation across the transport sector and some of the challenges faced by women. We were also joined by several male allies who provided invaluable insight into how they are driving change and empowering others to do the same.
